Art and History Museums – Maitland will host the 15th annual Participation exhibition March 21 – May 19th. The exhibit will highlight a broad spectrum of work from artists involved in the past two Participation exhibitions.
Artists include Robert Rivers, Dawn Schreiner, Martha Jo Mahoney, Randall Smith, Andrew Spear, Elizabeth St. Hilaire Nelson, Que Throm, Trent Tomengo, Camilo Velasquez, Bernie Martin, Cicero Greathouse, Martha Lent, Cheryl Mackey Smith, Cherie Dacko, Carla Poindexter, Robert Poindexter, Bernie Martin, Cheryl Bogdanowitsch, Ke Francis and Steve Piscitelli.

Director’s Choice
April 26 – May 19, 2013
This selection of work from the permanent collection features female artists from the 20th and 21st centuries. Each with a unique statement and technique, gender and the Director’s discretion are what brings these pieces together. We hope this exhibition of artists, including Carol Bechtel, Mindy Colton, Donne Bitner, March Avery, Dorothy Gillespie and Tanja Softic, inspires contemplation and discussion.

André Smith: Picturing Place

This exhibition presents highlights from the museum’s holdings of prints, paintings and drawings reflecting the travels of J. André Smith in the United States and Europe. Upon his return from the war, Smith settled in Stony Creek, CT, and wintered in Maitland, FL. But he continued to travel to France, where some of his most memorable etchings were completed.

Andre Smith Sketch Books

Andre Smith’s sketchbooks present an intimate glimpse into his creative process. A selection of his sketchbooks dating from 1927 will be on display illustrating Smith’s creative inspirations and processes.

Images of Eatonville: Then and Now

In partnership with the Zora Neale Hurston Museum of Fine Arts
This exhibition features paintings by Research Center founder Andre Smith, depicting Eatonville in the 1930s and ‘40s in contrast with images of Eatonville today- as photographed by students enrolled in photography at Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida. The works offer a glimpse of the multi-faceted community of Eatonville.

Founding of Eatonville
August 16 – Oct. 6, 2013
Eatonville is celebrating its 125th anniversary as the oldest incorporated African American municipality in the United States. The Art & History Museums – Maitland is proud to be a part of this celebration through the Founding of Eatonville exhibition at Maitland Historical Museum and the Eatonville: Then and Now exhibition at Maitland Art Center. Maitland and Eatonville have a history of strong ties between the two communities from the early formation of Eatonville to the friendship between Maitland Art Center founder Andre Smith and celebrated writer Zora Neale Hurston.
