Art School Workshops for Adults

Sketch Club
Located in Studio 10
Days/Time: Every Thursday, 6:45-9:15pm
Cost: $10 members, $15 others
Sketch Club is a weekly drop-in figure drawing opportunity. (No pre-registration needed.) Must be over 18 years old. The first and third Thursdays of each month include short poses ranging from 1 minute to 20 minutes. The second and fourth Thursdays of each month are long pose nights which include only one pose, with breaks, for the duration of the evening. Easels & drawing horses are provided on a first come, first served basis. Please bring your own art materials. No instruction provided.

Second Sunday Macramé Series
Instructor: Victoria Walsh, aka Macramé Momma

Join Macramé Momma Victoria Walsh the second Sunday of each month to create a different macramé project!

  • Macramé Jewelry: Three Hand-Knotted Heirlooms – January 12, 12-4pm
    Cost: $35 + $10 materials fee
    Macramé three different pieces of jewelry to keep or share! During this workshop you’ll learn to hand knot an adorable set of earrings. French-knit a chunky necklace and macra-make a knotty bracelet! All materials are provided along with light snacks and a guided tour of Macrame Momma’s studio and the historic Maitland Art Center. The workshop is recommended for adults and teens ages 14 and up.
  • Macramé Plant Hanger – February 9, 1-4pm
    Cost: $30 + $10 materials fee
    MacraMAKE your very own macrame plant hanger! Learn how to tie traditional knots and create a beautiful hanging basket for your home. All cord, beads, rings and other tools, as well as your very own plant to complete the hanger will be covered with your materials fee. You will also receive a booklet of hand drawn knotting instructions to help you recreate each knot at home.
  • Wall Hanging Knot Sampler – March 8, 1-4pm
    Cost: $30 + $10 materials fee
    Learn ten beautiful, beginner macrame knots in this knot sampler, wall hanging course with Macrame Momma. Macra-make something special for your home and learn all the basic knots to get started on most macrame projects! Learn about the different kinds of macrame cord and rope available and receive hand-illustrated instructional guide for each knot so you can recreate them at home! Materials and light snacks, as well as a studio and campus tour are all included.

Design your own macrame clothes with Macrame Momma! Class fees provide you with your own adjustable dress for that you will keep after your sessions are complete. 2 skeins of washable fabric cord to macra-make a wearable piece of art and hand drawn knotting guides to assist you with future projects. This class is intended for those that have intermediate knotting experience; but beginners can work at their own pace if they are wanting to jump in head first.

NEW! Holiday Metal Clay
Instructor: Marion Fague-Bass
Date/Time: December 14, 12pm-4pm (Located in Studio 10)
Cost: $65
Materials Fee: $25
This is a sampler for metal clay where students will create one or more pieces of jewelry of their own design that would make great gifts. This will include an introduction to rolling, texturing, cutting, shaping, refining, and finishing. Pieces will be fired during class time, so students can bring home these holiday gifts the same day!

Complete a project in each 3 hour workshop. All workshops are appropriate for beginners.

  • Build a Belt Buckle – February 9 (10am-2pm)
    Materials: $10-50, depending on project
    If you have a passion for something, tell people with a belt buckle! Design your car, cat, bike, and more using copper, brass, or silver. Students will use fabrication techniques and silver soldering to assemble their piece.
  • Tube Setting Stones – March 8 (1-4pm)
    Materials: purchase from instructor
    Learn to tube set stones adding to the design of your jewelry. Materials available for purchase from instructor; bring simple design ideas to workshop.
  • Make a Ring – April 4 (1-4pm)
    Learn the 3 basic steps of fabrication while creating a silver ring to custom fit your size.

DRAWING & PAINTING

Saturday Painting Workshops
Instructor: PJ Svejda

These workshops are a blend of painting and mixed media techniques, exploring a looser style of painting and greater expression. Complete a project in each unique workshop. All workshops are appropriate for all learners.

  • Boats – January 11
    This class will be a fun and unexpected challenge. Painting boats is a fun way to learn a bit about perspective, reflections, and depth.
  • Glamour Fruits – February 1
    This will be a more traditional approach to acrylic painting using a fruit still life as the inspiration. This is all about turning ordinary into interesting using light and color to create a beautiful fruit painting!
  • Florida Landscapes – March 7
    This class will emphasize brush work and color to create the most dynamic and interesting painting of a Florida-inspired landscape!
  • Flowers – April 4
    Celebrate spring with a beautiful floral painting! This class is loose and expressive with the bold color palette of spring wildflowers!

SCULPTURE

Welding Sculpture Workshop
February 16, 10am-2pm
Instructor: Jim Hosner
Location: Foundry Yard @ Maitland Art Center
Cost: $180 + $30 materials fee
Students learn the basics of welding to create steel sculptures using arc welding, cutting, and finishing techniques. Design concepts and safety procedures are covered during construction of your piece.

Basic Lifecasting/Bodycasting
March 28, 10:30am-2pm
Instructor: Michael Moffett
Location: Maitland Art Center Studio 10
Cost: $120 + $20 model fee
Basic lifecasting/bodycasting demonstration workshop covering the use of silicone and alginate mold-making on hands and faces, as well as casting into a positive hydrostone and other materials. Learn basic mold-making techniques for the beginner to advanced student using a live model. Build upon your skills next semester with a more advanced workshop.

POTTERY

Open Raku Firings
January 19, February 16, or March 15, 11am-2pm
Instructor: Cindy McDowell & Jim Patterson
Location: Maitland Art Center Studio 4
Cost: $40 + $10 materials fee
For those needing a place to raku, this is for you! We are holding monthy raku firings on the third Sunday of each month. Bring your bisqueware, we will provide the glazes. You may bring up to 5 pieces, each no taller than 10” and no wider than 6”.
