Art School Workshops for Adults

ON-GOING:
Sketch Club
Located in Studio 10
Days/Time: Every Thursday, 6:45-9:15pm
Cost: $10 members, $15 others
Sketch Club is a weekly drop-in figure drawing opportunity. (No pre-registration needed.) Must be over 18 years old. The first and third Thursdays of each month include short poses ranging from 1 minute to 20 minutes. The second and fourth Thursdays of each month are long pose nights which include only one pose, with breaks, for the duration of the evening. Easels & drawing horses are provided on a first come, first served basis. Please bring your own art materials. No instruction provided.

FIBER ART

Second Sunday Macramé Series
Instructor: Victoria Walsh, aka Macramé Momma

Location: Studio 10 at the Maitland Art Center
Join Macramé Momma Victoria Walsh the second Sunday of each month to create a different macramé project!

  • Plant Hangers – September 8, 1pm-4pm
    Cost: $30 + $10 materials fee
    MacraMAKE your very own macrame plant hanger! Learn how to tie traditional knots and create a beautiful hanging basket for your home. All cord, beads, rings and other tools, as well as your very own plant to complete the hanger will be covered with your materials fee. You will also receive a booklet of hand drawn knotting instructions to help you recreate each knot at home.
  • Owl Necklaces – October 13, 12pm-4pm
    Cost: $30 + $10 materials fee
    MacraMAKE a feathered friend! This special fall macrame workshop will take you knot by knot to macrame an owl necklace or keychain. All materials are provided along with a signed print of the hand illustrated owl pattern, hands-on instruction and some fun fall themed drinks and snacks.
  • Wall Hangings – November 10, 1pm-4pm
    Cost: $30 + $10 materials fee
    Macra-MAKE your very own wall hanging! Learn how to weave your fingers through a few basic knots to sculpt a beautiful handmade work of art for your home. Tickets include all the necessary materials in a variety of colors, hands-on instruction and light drinks and snacks.
  • Holiday Ornaments/Wreath – December 8, 1pm-4pm
    Cost: $25 + $10 materials fee
    Choose between two special holiday macrame patterns and macra-MAKE yourself or a loved one a hand knotted wreath or a set of two ornaments. Tickets include hands-on instruction, all materials, and holiday themed snacks.

JEWELRY

NEW! Holiday Metal Clay
Instructor: Marion Fague-Bass
Date/Time: December 14, 12pm-4pm (Located in Studio 10)
Cost: $65
Materials Fee: $25
This is a sampler for metal clay where students will create one or more pieces of jewelry of their own design that would make great gifts. This will include an introduction to rolling, texturing, cutting, shaping, refining, and finishing. Pieces will be fired during class time, so students can bring home these holiday gifts the same day!

Sunday Jewelry Workshops

Materials included unless noted – please bring cash materials fee to workshop.
Complete a project in each 3 hour workshop. All workshops are appropriate for beginners.

  • Build a Belt Buckle – October 13 (10am-2pm)
    Materials: $10-50, depending on project
    If you have a passion for something, tell people with a belt buckle! Design your car, cat, bike, and more using copper, brass, or silver. Students will use fabrication techniques and silver soldering to assemble their piece.
  • Tube Setting Stones – November 10
    Materials: purchase from instructor
    Learn to tube set stones adding to the design of your jewelry. Materials available for purchase from instructor; bring simple design ideas to workshop.
  • Make a Ring – December 8
    Learn the 3 basic steps of fabrication while creating a silver ring to custom fit your size.

Taste of Metal Clay
Instructor: Marion Fague-Bass

Materials Fee: $25
This is a sampler to precious metal clay where the students will create one or more pieces of jewelry of their own design. This will include an introduction to rolling, texturing, cutting, shaping, refining and finishing. Pieces will be fired by the instructor during class time which will allow students to complete their pieces in one session.

ENCAUSTICS

Photo Encaustics
Instructor: Shelley Jean

Photo Encaustics combines photography with the ancient art of painting using molten beeswax and pigments to create a unique surface. This all-level class will emphasize the photographic image and the variety of ways you can incorporate encaustic techniques and mixed media to create stunning works of art. We will experiment with several processes, such as embedding, image transfers, dipping, hand coloring, & texturing. Bring your cameras, photos, and creativity and let’s explore this alternative process together!

Saturday Painting Workshops

These workshops are a blend of painting and mixed media techniques, exploring a looser style of painting and greater expression. Complete a project in each unique workshop. All workshops are appropriate for all learners.

  • Acrylic Abstract – September 7
    This class is all about expression! Learn what makes abstract painting successful using layering, mark-making, and atmosphere.
  • Sugar Skulls – October 5
    It’s that time again! Influenced by the popular Mexican holiday Día de los Muertos, come paint a lively and flower-full sugar skull!
  • Succulents – November 2
    Beautiful colors and subtle value changes are some of what make succulents so appealing. Come explore color and texture as we paint beautiful expressive succulents!
  • Rustic Tobacco Barn – December 7
    Inspired by plein air painting, this project is all about capturing nostalgia! Learn about lighting and texture as we paint an old rustic barn!

Live Model Mini Sessions with PJ

This is an a la carte approach to the figure with instruction and a live model. Viewing a live nude model learn to successfully draw or paint a figure. Interested in Portraits? Join in March for creating a portrait from a live model.

I Can Fly

This is designed to encourage your abilities to accomplish what you set out to do. It is a playful workshop in which you will paint a pair of wings large enough for it to appear as if they are your wings when standing in front of them!

Wild Honey

Open up and feel free to express your true self. Feeling pent up or tight can cause you to hold your thoughts captive. Painting can be like walking on the edge but when you add intention and some soul searching, your experience can get sticky, sweet, wise & wild!

SCULPTURE

Welding Sculptures
Instructor: Jim Hosner & Michael Moffett

Materials Fee: $30
Students learn the basics of welding to create steel sculptures using arc welding, cutting and finishing techniques. Design concepts and safety procedures are covered during construction of piece.
