SUMMARY:Building Maitland
DESCRIPTION:The city of Maitland’s architectural landscape has changed seemingly with each decade. The orange groves of the early 1900s gave way to new businesses and homes\, springing up to support the families moving to the area in droves. In the Maitland Historical Museum\, Building Maitland examines the architectural evolution that the city has undergone in the last century. From Victorian houses\, to mid-century modern shopping plazas\, to ultra-modern apartment buildings\, the story of the city’s growth can be told by the buildings of each era. \nBuilding Maitland will appear in the Maitland Historical Museum\, while The Exotic Realms of Jules André Smith is featured in the Maitland Art Center gallery.

SUMMARY:The Exotic Realms of Jules André Smith
DESCRIPTION:The Exotic Realms of Jules André Smith  explores Smith’s extensive body of work\, including paintings\, watercolors\, sculptures\, concrete reliefs\, theatre set designs\, architectural drawings and architectural ornamentation. Through this exhibition\, we hope to understand more about his 1937-1942 designs for the Research Studio\, which he called “Espero\,” or Hope. Awarded the National Historic Landmark distinction for being one of the last remaining examples of Mayan Revival architecture in the southeastern United States\, the Center features hundreds of relief carvings depicting Christian and Pagan gods and figures from a variety of religions and cultures. Exotic Realms invites you to step into these fantastical worlds\, and learn more about the man who created them. \nExotic Realms will appear in the Maitland Art Center gallery\, while Building Maitland will be featured in the Maitland Historical Museum.

Learn more >> \n  \n \nAbout Wade Schaming\nWade Schaming (b. 1984; Pittsburgh\, PA) lives and works in New York City. His sculptures are painstakingly assembled solely through processes of stacking. The materials remain unchanged – used as is/found – and are unfixed to each other: as such\, he creates delicate juxtapositions perilously balanced\, like thought given concrete form. From discarded and forgotten objects\, which memorialize hope\, the assembled forms aspire to return dignity to the bearer and evoke empathy in the viewer. This process is site-specific and confined to the present moment: because he works only with found and discarded materials (nothing used is purchased)\, his pieces reflect their origins while reinforcing a desire to create impermanence. \nSchaming studied at the University of Pittsburgh\, Pittsburgh\, PA (BA 2006) and the School of Visual Arts\, New York\, NY (MFA 2010). His work has been exhibited throughout the United States\, including at the Bronx Museum of the Arts\, Bronx\, NY\, Field Projects\, New York\, NY\, The Museum of Human Achievement\, Austin\, TX and Primary Projects\, Miami\, FL. He has been profiled/interviewed by Paper Magazine\, International Sculpture Center and The New York Times. Residency awards include the Artist in the Marketplace (AIM) program\, Bronx\, NY (2012)\, Residency 108\, Clermont\, NY (2014)\, the Keyholder Residency at the Lower East Side Printshop\, New York\, NY (2015)\, Yaddo\, Saratoga Springs\, NY (2016)\, Constance Saltonstall Foundation for the Arts\, Ithaca\, NY (2017)\, The Edward F. Albee Foundation\, Montauk\, NY (2017)\, Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts\, Nebraska City\, NE (2017) and Jentel Foundation\, Banner\, WY (2018).
