SUMMARY:In Between: Painting the Post Immigrant Experience
DESCRIPTION:In Between: Painting the Post Immigrant Experience\nruns October 8\, 2022 – January 22\, 2023 in the Maitland Art Center gallery \nThis exhibition features the work of three extraordinary painters\, Cuban-born Leo Cordovi\, Filipino-born MJ Torrecampo\, and Syrian American Mär Martinez. The resulting three visual narratives of the post immigration experience all unite to form a picture of modern American identity. Through explorations of memory\, resilience\, family\, and sanctuary\, these artists are redefining themselves in a space between seemingly opposing cultural forces. This sense of evolving identity\, like the brushstrokes of their paintings\, is layered and reworked by time. \nOpening reception is October 7\, 6:30-9:00pm. Tickets available here >>

SUMMARY:A&H Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Make new friends at the A&H Members-Only Book Club! Join A&H Director of Advancement Jessi VanPelt every other month in our scenic Cottage at Lake Lily to share your opinions on fascinating topics in the realms of art and history. At the end of each meeting\, we’ll vote on what book to read together next. \nAt our second meeting\, we’ll discuss Old In Art School: A Memoir of Starting Over by Nell Painter. Following her retirement from Princeton University\, celebrated historian Dr. Nell Irvin Painter surprised everyone in her life by returning to school–in her sixties–to earn a BFA and MFA in painting. We’ll dive into questions like: How are women and artists seen and judged by their age\, looks\, and race?\, and more. \nWe will have a couple copies of this book in our Museum Store\, or you can find this title on Amazon\, as well as many online used bookstores\, and at public libraries. Choose us as your Amazon Smile charity and we’ll receive 0.5% of all your Amazon purchases as a donation. \nBook Club meetings are just $5 (which includes snacks and sodas). Space is limited so you must register in advance. If you’re not a current A&H member\, you must join or renew before Book Club date. Membership payments cannot be accepted at the event. \nIf you have any questions or need to verify your membership status\, contact Jessi at jvanpelt@artandhistory.org. (Send your recommendations for what book to read next here too!) \nRegister here >>

SUMMARY:Sweet\, Fresh\, Juicy: Florida Citrus in Art and History
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe citrus industry had an enormous impact on Central Florida and Maitland in particular during the mid-20th century. This exhibition\, which spans the Maitland Art Center Gallery and the Maitland Historical Museum\, celebrates the region’s finest export. \nIn the Maitland Historical Museum\, examine the rise and fall of the Central Florida citrus industry through a collection of historic citrus labels from some of Central Florida’s growers and packers\, many on loan from the Orange County Regional History Center’s vast archives. \nIn the Maitland Art Center Gallery\, we embrace Florida’s premier citrus while honoring the farmworker through a collection of citrus-themed artwork from local and national artists\, as well as Maitland Art Center founder J. André Smith’s interpretations of the orange groves that once surrounded his studio. \nSweet\, Fresh\, Juicy is sponsored by:

SUMMARY:History Talk: Black Self-emancipators of Florida
DESCRIPTION:This Fall’s Maitland History Museum exhibition\, Fumecheliga: A History of the First Peoples of Florida\, was co-curated by Exhibitions Manager Katie Benson and Dr. Neil Vaz. Dr. Vaz is a professor of Humanities/History at Seminole State College and specializes in the history of Maroon communities and the African Diaspora. This talk by Dr. Vaz is in conjunction with the exhibition. The History Museum and Art Center gallery will be open 5:30-8:00pm on this day\, as part of our monthly Last Wednesdays.\n\nAbout the speaker:\n\nNeil Vaz was born on November 3\, 1983\, in Brooklyn\, New York\, to a Jamaican father and Grenadian mother. He is the third child of four boys. His family moved to Casselberry\, Florida\, just shy of his second birthday. Neil and his brothers\, attended Seminole County Public Schools\, including Casselberry Elementary\, South Seminole Middle\, and Lyman High School. For College Neil attended Seminole Community College\, between 2002 and 2005\, where he met great professors such as Dr. Stephen Caldwell Wright\, Trent Tomengo\, and Raphael Jackson. All three of these professors in college\, who were Neil’s first experiences with African American males instructing him in academia\, inspired him to take his schooling seriously and pursue a degree in the area of social sciences focusing on the history of his ancestors.\n\nAfter graduating from Seminole in 2005\, Neil attended Florida State University. He majored in political science and minored in history. His passion for history continued to increase\, and after graduating with a bachelor’s in 2007\, and working as a substitute teacher and a JV boy’s basketball coach at his former high school between 2008 and 2009\, Neil’s passion for teaching also developed.\n\nIn 2009\, Neil was accepted to Howard University’s Master’s program in history\, in Washington\, D.C.\, where he majored in African History. After graduating in 2011\, he stayed at Howard for the Doctoral program in African diaspora history\, focusing on eighteenth century African resistance to enslavement in the Caribbean. In 2016\, Neil defended his dissertation entitled Dominica’s Neg Mawon: Maroonage\, Diaspora\, and Transatlantic Networks\, 1763-1814. After graduating\, Neil moved back to Florida to raise his children and secured a job at his alma mater\, Seminole State College. Neil’s passion is to continue to uncover and tell the stories of those communities of African descent throughout the diaspora that fought for their freedom from slavery in spite of all the odds stacked against them\, many of which are still with us today.

SUMMARY:Free Family Day: Winter Wonderland
DESCRIPTION:Winter Wonderland Family Day Art Workshop at A&H\nSaturday December 10\, 2022\n10:00 am – 1 pm \nYour family is invited to celebrate the arrival of a new season at our Winter Wonderland Art Workshop! Children will create wintery snowflake art mobiles in our main garden of our beautiful and historic campus\, using the colors of winter\, treasures from nature and handprinted monoprint snowflakes! \nOur monoprint snowflakes are inspired by A & H’s founder\, Jules Andre’ Smith – a master printmaker who loved experimenting with art. Children will learn that monoprints are the simplest form of printmaking. And just like there are never two snowflakes that are exactly alike\, the same can be said with monoprints! Each hand-printed snowflake used in the mobiles will be unique and a one-of-a-kind piece of art! Mobiles will be ready to take home at the end of the workshop to display at your holiday celebrations. So\, take a break from shoveling sunshine\, and get a little creative and wintery with us! Space is limited. \nFamily Day is free of charge and brought to you by the Art & History Museums\, Maitland. \n(Registration link coming soon)
