Picasso’s War is the never-before-told story about how a single exhibition\, a decade in the making\, irrevocably changed American taste\, and in doing so saved dozens of the twentieth century’s most enduring artworks from the Nazis. Through a deft combination of new scholarship and vivid storytelling\, Hugh Eakin shows how two men and their obsession with Picasso changed the art world forever. Join us as children hand-build their own clay pinch pots\, and then embellish it with wonderful tiny treasures from our garden! Our pinch pots are inspired by A & H’s founding artist\, J. DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Ryan Price \nCost: $75 + $20 material fees. \nLocation: Studio 10 \nMaterials fees must be paid in cash directly to the instructor\, and are due on the day of the workshop. \nParticipants will use Legos as a bases to create abstract designs that they will then use a brayer to ink up and do a rubbing with a wooden spoon or run it through the press. For multicolor designs\, the instructor will also demonstrate how to create a registration for lining up the print in the same area on the paper. \nThis workshop is designed to teach participants the basic ideas behind relief printmaking. Using the Legos to “build” your design broadens the audience to those who may not have strong drawing skills or background in the arts but are interested in printmaking. SUMMARY:Automatic Drawing
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, August 19 |  11am-2pm \nInstructor: Ryan Price \nLocation: Studio 10 \nCost: $65 + $10 material fees. \nMaterials fees must be paid in cash directly to the instructor\, and are due on the day of the workshop. \nNo drawing experience is required! Open to all levels! Automatic drawing is a technique named and commonly used by the Surrealists. It involves the artist directly and randomly moving the pen or drawing tool with no preconceived image or plan. This technique is similar to what writers termed\, “Stream of consciousness” writing\, where through a mental shift drawing automatically allows participants let their subconscious flow through their hands. \nParticipants will be encouraged to draw their heart’s content out\, and learn to unshackle themselves from hesitation. We control the anxiety of being confronted by a blank sheet using a low-stakes process like drawing. Participants will learn how to engage their subconscious as a means of express what lies under the surface of the mind. Students will create many drawings using different materials to get them out of their heads and their comfort zones. You will learn about processes like automatism\, frottage\, and responsive drawing. \nTake your drawing utensil and move with rhythm or erraticism\, write your name obsessively until it becomes maddening marks. Twist and turn the pencil or pen with the delicacy and grace of an angel and the brutish wickedness of a demon. Use this low-stakes practice as a way to get more comfortable with a material or tool. The drawing doesn’t ever have to be  finished\, it can be left as a single deposit of personal memory.
