During their residency\, Artists-in-Residence (AiRs) live and work in the historic Maitland Art Center\, receiving inspiration from the historic artists’ commune and the surrounding community. \n \nAbout Wade Schaming \nWade Schaming (b. 1984; Pittsburgh\, PA) lives and works in New York City. His sculptures are painstakingly assembled solely through processes of stacking. The materials remain unchanged – used as is/found – and are unfixed to each other: as such\, he creates delicate juxtapositions perilously balanced\, like thought given concrete form. From discarded and forgotten objects\, which memorialize hope\, the assembled forms aspire to return dignity to the bearer and evoke empathy in the viewer. This process is site-specific and confined to the present moment: because he works only with found and discarded materials (nothing used is purchased)\, his pieces reflect their origins while reinforcing a desire to create impermanence. \nSchaming studied at the University of Pittsburgh\, Pittsburgh\, PA (BA 2006) and the School of Visual Arts\, New York\, NY (MFA 2010). His work has been exhibited throughout the United States\, including at the Bronx Museum of the Arts\, Bronx\, NY\, Field Projects\, New York\, NY\, The Museum of Human Achievement\, Austin\, TX and Primary Projects\, Miami\, FL. He has been profiled/interviewed by Paper Magazine\, International Sculpture Center and The New York Times. Residency awards include the Artist in the Marketplace (AIM) program\, Bronx\, NY (2012)\, Residency 108\, Clermont\, NY (2014)\, the Keyholder Residency at the Lower East Side Printshop\, New York\, NY (2015)\, Yaddo\, Saratoga Springs\, NY (2016)\, Constance Saltonstall Foundation for the Arts\, Ithaca\, NY (2017)\, The Edward F. SUMMARY:Building Maitland
DESCRIPTION:The city of Maitland’s architectural landscape has changed seemingly with each decade. The orange groves of the early 1900s gave way to new businesses and homes\, springing up to support the families moving to the area in droves. In the Maitland Historical Museum\, Building Maitland examines the architectural evolution that the city has undergone in the last century. From Victorian houses\, to mid-century modern shopping plazas\, to ultra-modern apartment buildings\, the story of the city’s growth can be told by the buildings of each era. \nBuilding Maitland will appear in the Maitland Historical Museum\, while The Exotic Realms of Jules André Smith is featured in the Maitland Art Center gallery.

SUMMARY:Friday the 13th Paranormal Investigation at the Waterhouse Residence
DESCRIPTION:Maitland’s most popular Halloween event is back for a special Friday the 13th edition! Join one of the investigators from American Ghost Adventures to check in on the activity at the Waterhouse Residence Museum. This one-night-only event is likely to sell out\, so get your tickets today! \nThe Waterhouse Residence was built in 1884 by pioneer and carpenter William H. Waterhouse\, as a home for his family. The Waterhouse family was a critical part of the development of Maitland: William’s son Charles was the architect behind the Maitland Public Library\, where his mother Sarah (and later his sister\, Stella) was the head librarian. The home remained in the family for generations until the 1980s\, when it was donated to the City of Maitland. Today\, it operates as a museum dedicated to showcasing life in the earliest days of Maitland. \nNow restored to peak Victorian charm\, the home has had reports of unusual occurrences that some visitors believe are proof of paranormal activity in the home. Using real paranormal investigation equipment\, decide for yourself on this exclusive tour. \nTour Times:\n6:30pm\, 8:00pm\, 9:30pm \n

SUMMARY:Haunted Tours at the Maitland Art Center
DESCRIPTION:Greater Orlando’s only National Historic Landmark has quite the history. Named “one of the most haunted spots in Central Florida” by the Orlando Weekly\, it holds more than 80 years of stories within its walls. On this tour\, you will hear the history and ghost stories of the facility from its staff and students. The Maitland Art Center\, originally named the Research Studio\, was built by artist J. André Smith during the final years of his life\, from 1937-1959. The high walls of the center were created to keep curious minds from encroaching on Smith’s territory during his life\, before being officially opened to the public many years after his death. A&H staff still feels the presence of André 58 years later\, keeping an eye on the grounds and letting it be known when he is not happy. \nAdvance tickets: $10 member\, $15 general;\nWalk-up (limited): $15 A&H members; $20 general \nTours run every half hour from 6:30-9pm. Space is limited to ensure a great tour experience for all guests. Advance purchase is recommended as this event typically sells out! \nLooking for more haunts? Join us at the Victorian-era Waterhouse Residence Museum for a paranormal investigation!

SUMMARY:Sweet\, Fresh\, Juicy: Florida Citrus in Art and History
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe citrus industry had an enormous impact on Central Florida and Maitland in particular during the mid-20th century. This exhibition\, which spans the Maitland Art Center Gallery and the Maitland Historical Museum\, celebrates the region’s finest export. \nIn the Maitland Historical Museum\, examine the rise and fall of the Central Florida citrus industry through a collection of historic citrus labels from some of Central Florida’s growers and packers\, many on loan from the Orange County Regional History Center’s vast archives. \nIn the Maitland Art Center Gallery\, we embrace Florida’s premier citrus while honoring the farmworker through a collection of citrus-themed artwork from local and national artists\, as well as Maitland Art Center founder J. André Smith’s interpretations of the orange groves that once surrounded his studio. \nSweet\, Fresh\, Juicy is sponsored by:
