SUMMARY:Maitland's Attic: A Journey Through A Small City's Past
DESCRIPTION:  \nThis exhibition is an interactive\, hands-on exploration into the history of Maitland and its surrounding areas! \n\nThere were a lot of things that did not happen in Maitland. There were no great battles fought on the soil\, nor was it home to any infamous individuals. The town was not the epicenter of any great social movements\, nor was it home to discoveries that would better humankind. Maitland was\, and continues to be\, a small town\, like so many others.\n\nThe story of Maitland is a story of seemingly ordinary people who lived through extraordinary times\, a place where people made their homes while dramatic events unfolded in other parts of the world. People labored here\, raised their families\, loved\, lost\, thought\, and created. The objects in the museum’s collection reflect the brightness of these lives against the backdrop of a changing and often troubled world.\n\n\nEach artifact tells a story specific to a place and time. They are the carriers of the memories of the people who owned them\, who felt that they were important enough to their own story to preserve them. Many of them are the prototypes of the objects that we use and hold dear today\, objects which will one day carry our own memories forward.\nWelcome to Maitland’s Attic\, a gathering place of the unique items that tell of Maitland’s past. From the everyday to the downright weird\, these objects and their stories open a window onto important moments throughout the history of the town\, and the people who called it home.\n\n\n\n¡Esta exhibición es interactivo y de primera mano adentro de la historia de Maitland y las áreas cercanas! \nEn Maitland no ocurrieron muchas cosas.

SUMMARY:(Un)Common Light
DESCRIPTION:Wallpaper Dragon (Detail)\, by Elisabeth Condon \nThis exhibition showcases the work of two abstract painters\, Elisabeth Condon and Carole d’Inverno. \nElisabeth Condon’s paintings are an intersection of nature\, décor\, and abstraction. Their vocabulary of flower\, lattice\, pour evolves from combinations of sumi-e\, expressionist\, and Color Field paint applications. Both women have served as Artists in Residence at the Art & History Museums of Maitland.

SUMMARY:Free Family Day: Earth Day at A&H
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by A&H’s founder\, J. Andre’ Smith\, who was a master printmaker that loved experimenting with art. Today as we celebrate Earth Day\, we will be experimenting with printmaking while making eco-inspired tote bags from all kinds of recycled materials! \nPrintmaking is an artistic process that involves transferring an image from one surface to another. Young apprentice printmakers will experience printmaking with different textures\, colors and patterns\, all with materials that would normally be thrown away. And\, bonus: when we recycle\, we do something kind for the earth\, too! So come experiment with art and create a one-of-a-kind tote bag that you can use over and over again. \nSpace is limited\, so reserve a spot for your family today!

SUMMARY:A&H Conversations: Carole d'Inverno
DESCRIPTION:A&H Conversations invites lifetime learners like you to discuss fascinating topics anchored in Central Florida history\, arts\, and culture. New themes are presented monthly by visiting subject matter experts. This month we’ll be in conversation with artist Carole d’Invierno\, one of the two New York-based abstract painters in our gallery exhibition (Un)Common Light. Get your free tickets here>> \nCarole d’Inverno’s work translates historical and geographical data from local communities into humanized abstractions. The resulting paintings and drawings naturally reflect the community and its people. Carole has been an Artist in Residence at the Art & History Museums of Maitland and we’re honored to welcome her as a gallery artist and speaker. Learn more about her exhibition\, (Un)Common Light\, here>> \nCarole’s Artist Statement\nHistory is central to my work. \nI immigrated from Europe to the United States as a young woman. I saw the disparity in wealth\, the gun violence\, the racial tension\, but also the familial interactions in close-knit communities\, the pride in country\, the belief in ‘everything is possible’. I turned to history to understand the contradictions. \nI travel quite a lot in the US and have seen many changes since the late ’70s. From the brake-neck expansion of the suburbs\, to the emptying of Main Streets\, the decline of the industrial cities of the North\, and the population explosion of the Sun Belt\, America keeps morphing. In contrast with my upbringing\, the country seems to be in constant motion. Jobs\, homes\, families\, neighborhoods\, wealth\, all can change in a blink of time. How can I understand these phenomenas? What is behind them? What do they have in common? Instead of trying to grasp the whole picture at once\, I focus on regional history. Each community I study and render in paintings and drawings adds to my understanding. \nTo prepare for a new series I visit the local communities. I take in the scenery and spend time with locals. I listen to stories\, go to museums and art centers\, look at monuments\, read at the local library\, and even peruse restaurant menus! I consult maps\, photos\, relevant books\, and fill sketchbooks with notes and drawings. A unique picture starts developing in my mind. In the studio my intuition takes the lead and I let the facts\, places\, and local stories coalesce in my mind. The data is humanized. Paintings and drawings naturally reflect the community\, and its people. Each new series becomes part of the whole and teaches me more. \nWe all have stories to tell. \n\n*Are you a student? Ask your professor about extra credit for attending A&H Conversations! As many colleges and universities offer extra credit for attending our talks\, we do take attendance for qualifying students. Your professors can be added to our extra credit program to receive advance notice of speakers and a copy of our student attendance rolls by emailing hmiller@artandhistory.org.
