DESCRIPTION:A&H is pleased to welcome artist Katrina Bello as our second Artist-in-Residence of 2019. Meet Katrina and hear about her inspiration and process. This event is free and open to the public.\n\nFrom the artist:\nA vast wilderness is a source of wonder and beauty. Deserts\, marshes\, oceans\, forests\, mountain ranges\, glaciers – some of the feelings evoked by these landscapes are solitude and mystery. Their breadth and seeming emptiness speak to us of otherness\, our dreams\, our fears and what is beyond our control. They are also fragile and undergoing dramatic changes. “Immensities” will be an artist talk about my drawing practice and how it is informed by personal and research narratives that tell a story of the beauty\, fragility and necessity of these wildernesses.  Some of the narratives that the talk will cover are my experience of migration\, the choice of drawing as my primary medium\, and the artists who have influenced my art practice.

SUMMARY:History Lecture - Maitland's African American History: Marked\, Unmarked\, Remembered
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Scot French \nIn the lecture\, Dr. Scot French\, guest curator of the Maitland History Museum’s Spring 2019 exhibition\, will discuss his efforts to document Maitland’s African American History — from the arrival of homesteaders and grove workers in the mid-1870s through the Jim Crow Era of exclusion\, marginalization\, and erasure to the desegregated civic and commemorative landscapes of today. While African American residents played a critical role in the founding of Maitland\, much of their history extends beyond city limits into the neighboring black communities of Eatonville\, Hannibal Square\, and Woodbridge. French will “reintegrate” that social history into Maitland’s civic narrative and suggest ways that we — like Zora Neale Hurston and André Smith in the 1930s and ’40s — can draw insight and inspiration from it.

DESCRIPTION:In 1917\, upon America’s entry into World War I\, J. André Smith\, founder of the Maitland Art Center (formerly known as the Research Studio)\, enlisted in the Army Reserve and received officer’s training. He first served with a camouflage unit and then joined as the senior officer and commander in a war art program\, consisting of eight professional artists to document the activities of the American Expeditionary Force in France. Smith designed the Distinguished Service Cross\, and after the war\, he published In France with the American Expeditionary Forces\, which included many of his wartime drawings.  Timed to coincide with the centenary of the end of the First World War on November 11\, Art & History Museums—Maitland presents two exhibitions: Soldier’s Home: Veterans’ Art in Central Florida in the Maitland Art Center and J. André Smith and the Art of Camouflage in the Maitland Historical Museum. \nJ. André Smith and the Art of Camouflage provides an overview of André Smith’s experimentation with camouflage methods during World War I\, with objects recreated to bring several of his ideas to life and to explore the intersection of art with the mechanics of war. This exhibit is curated by Danielle Thomas and Dan L. DESCRIPTION:The first fiber bombing for the project is located in the field next to A&H’s main campus \nIn conjunction with the A&H’s Soldier’s Home and Art of Camouflage exhibitions\, Victoria Walsh (aka Macramé Momma) will lead “fiber bombing” community-based art installations\, titled Central Florida Yellow Ribbon Project. It aims to usher awareness about homeless veterans and their needs. DESCRIPTION:Bruce Marsh — whose works are included the Enchanted Florida exhibition in Maitland Art Center — will present a talk titled “Populating the Landscape”\, to discuss & show the development of his painting over the past few years\, along with historical images & facts. \nDinner by Swine & Sons Provisions (including a vegetarian option) will be available for purchase to enjoy before and during the talk. \nAfterwards\, curator and Director of Experiences Dr. Rangsook Yoon will take us to the Art Center galleries to discuss Marsh’s works and introduce other Enchanted Florida artists’ works. \nAdmission: $3 A&H members / $6 general / cash bar & food \nAbout the artist: Bruce Marsh is a professor emeritus of art from the University of South Florida\, whose work focuses on closely observed expanses of landscape. His artwork reflects the inherent problems and opportunities of working and painting on site\, while creating a raw glimpse into nature’s most beautiful\, but hard to capture places. His works have been featured in many museums nationally\, including multiple exhibitions in Tampa Museum of Art; and three of his massive oil paintings can be seen at the Orlando International Airport\, among many other commercial buildings nationwide.
