Open to all levels! Automatic drawing is a technique named and commonly used by the Surrealists. It involves the artist directly and randomly moving the pen or drawing tool with no preconceived image or plan. This technique is similar to what writers termed\, “Stream of consciousness” writing\, where through a mental shift drawing automatically allows participants let their subconscious flow through their hands. \nParticipants will be encouraged to draw their heart’s content out\, and learn to unshackle themselves from hesitation. We control the anxiety of being confronted by a blank sheet using a low-stakes process like drawing. Participants will learn how to engage their subconscious as a means of express what lies under the surface of the mind. Students will create many drawings using different materials to get them out of their heads and their comfort zones. You will learn about processes like automatism\, frottage\, and responsive drawing. \nTake your drawing utensil and move with rhythm or erraticism\, write your name obsessively until it becomes maddening marks. Twist and turn the pencil or pen with the delicacy and grace of an angel and the brutish wickedness of a demon. Use this low-stakes practice as a way to get more comfortable with a material or tool. The drawing doesn’t ever have to be  finished\, it can be left as a single deposit of personal memory. There is no right or wrong way to practice automatic drawing. \nRegister Here>> \n*Graphic Art by Ryan Price

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: (Un)Common Bond
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the opening of this new exhibition with live music\, delicious food\, a cash bar\, and our featured artists on our beautiful National Historic Landmark campus! This exhibition will feature the photography and audio/visual work of Monica Jane Frisell and Adam Scher from their time as Artists in Residence here at the Art and History Museums of Maitland. Get your tickets here>> \nAbout the exhibition: Since 2021\, photographer Monica Frisell and audio recorder/editor Adam Scher (self-described “collectors of faces and stories”) have been zigzagging across the country in The Ark\, amassing an audiovisual archive which they call Portrait Of US. The stories are garnered from people based in both rural and urban communities\, each one a snapshot of one ordinary person but which when threaded together\, produce a mosaic of community life and what binds us together\, collectively\, as Americans. \nJust some of the topics that have been entrusted to and captured by Frisell and Scher for their now 250-and-counting portrait portfolio include: grappling with health problems or issues of sexual or cultural identity and body image; dealing with grief or the pressures of starting a business or becoming a parent; handling the impact of addiction\, sobriety\, faith or politics; what binds a person historically to a place; and just recalling important personal memories\, such as a first kiss… \nAs Frisell explains\, “Many folks seem to derive relief from the experience – particularly after the isolation of the Pandemic – the project provides a moment for people to feel seen and heard\, albeit by two seeming strangers.”
