SUMMARY:History Lecture - Maitland's African American History: Marked\, Unmarked\, Remembered
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Scot French \nIn the lecture\, Dr. Scot French\, guest curator of the Maitland History Museum’s Spring 2019 exhibition\, will discuss his efforts to document Maitland’s African American History — from the arrival of homesteaders and grove workers in the mid-1870s through the Jim Crow Era of exclusion\, marginalization\, and erasure to the desegregated civic and commemorative landscapes of today. While African American residents played a critical role in the founding of Maitland\, much of their history extends beyond city limits into the neighboring black communities of Eatonville\, Hannibal Square\, and Woodbridge. French will “reintegrate” that social history into Maitland’s civic narrative and suggest ways that we — like Zora Neale Hurston and André Smith in the 1930s and ’40s — can draw insight and inspiration from it.

SUMMARY:Maitland and African American Experiences
DESCRIPTION:J. André Smith\, Churchgoers\, Eatonville\, oil on Masonite\, ca. 1940\, 35 ¼ x 29 ¼\, Collection of Art & History Museums–Maitland\, CM72.02.09 \nThe Art & History Museums–Maitland opens two exhibitions highlighting resident African American experiences and the intertwined histories of Maitland and Eatonville: Maitland and African American Experiences Then & Now: J. André Smith and Jane Turner at the Maitland Art Center\, and Maitland and African American Experiences: Marked\, Unmarked\, Remembered at the Maitland Historical Museum. \nJ. André Smith and Jane Turner features oil paintings\, watercolors\, and drawings by J. André Smith and two “Bok Fellows\,” Carlson Davenport and H. H. Shaw\, along with acrylic paintings and sculptural works by the self-taught artist\, Jane Turner\, residing and working in both Maitland and Eatonville. While the works created by Smith and his contemporaries portray images of African Americans from the point of view of outsiders\, Turner’s portraits and works inspired by historical events and figures counter them by offering glimpses of her rich\, multifaceted experience as a community member. \nAfrican Americans have lived and worked in Maitland and its neighboring communities for nearly 150 years\, yet this historic black presence is rarely acknowledged in the city’s pictorial displays\, roadside markers\, and civic narratives. Researched and curated by University of Central Florida historian Scot French\, Marked\, Unmarked\, Remembered addresses that omission by examining the hidden history\, culture\, and experiences of African Americans across the decades—from their first arrival in Lake Maitland as pioneer homesteaders and grove workers in the 1870s\, through the Jim Crow Era of segregation\, exclusion and erasure\, to the desegregated (yet not fully integrated) civic and commemorative landscapes of today. \nVisit the Plan Your Visit page for hours & pricing.  Admission includes entry to Maitland Art Center\, Maitland Historical Museum and the Telephone Museum.

SUMMARY:Summer Evenings with André
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that J. André Smith\, founder of the Maitland Art Center\, was not only an architect and artist\, but also a playwright?! This Summer\, the A&H — in partnership with Central Florida Community Arts — will regale you with his tales of romance\, murder\, comedy and drama! Three Saturday evenings of play readings will be offered\, each followed by a Q&A session. All proceeds benefit the Art & History Museums – Maitland’s National Historic Landmark. \nPlease note\, due to the adult themes\, these plays are recommended for ages 13 and up\, with parental discretion. \n[plsc_divider color=”black” style=”solid”] \nThe first of the three play readings (July 14) was a fabulous treat. — one of the attendees had this to say:\n“Tonight I attended a Summer Evening with André…I was embarrassed that as a 23 year Maitland resident it has taken me this long to spend an evening with André Smith. What an incredible man\, artist\, writer\, thinker\, creator Smith was… Director Kaitlyn Harrington and her band of actors did an outrageous job of bringing to life such edge-of-your-seat\, funny\, deplorable\, sad human life stories that incredibly could all be any of our life stories. I found myself sucked into each character and each act.” -Margaret \n[plsc_divider color=”black” style=”solid”] \nAUGUST 4: \nUnnamed WWI Play: A soldier\, left for dead\, returns to reveal the truth about another man who has been labeled a war hero. \nPumpkin Pie – A Shadow Play: When two children go looking for a pumpkin\, they encounter a wicked witch. This charming tale of adventure and dismemberment will be sure to delight your children. (If they are age 13 & up!) \nThe Bandit of the Var: A medieval tale of a prince who has lost his throne\, and the woman who can help him regain it. Sure\, he kidnapped her\, and yes\, she’s engaged to his brother\, but all is fair in love and war\, right? \nAugust 4th’s readings directed by Kaitlyn Harrington | Stage directions read by CC Smith & Kendall Smith\nUnnamed WWI Play cast: Nicholas D’Alessandro\, Jim Cundiff\, Holland Hayes\, Stelson Telfort\, Donald Johnston\, and Austin Humphrey\nPumpkin Pie\, A Shadow Play cast: Kaitlin Elizabeth Baxter\, Donald Johnston\, Ana Eligio\, and Missy Barnes\nThe Bandit of the Var cast: Josh Melendez\, James Blaisdell\, Austin Humphrey\, Arius West\, Gabriella Bivona\, and Donald Johnston \n[plsc_divider color=”black” style=”solid”] \nAUGUST 25: \n \nThe Golden Tomb: On a journey to leave New York for a digging party in Egypt with the assistance of an Egyptian Prince\, what could go wrong?
