SUMMARY:Free Fall Family Day at A&H + Paper Lantern Family Art Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the colors of a new season with a family art workshop\, face painting\, scavenger hunt\, and free admission to three museums! \nBring your whole family to say goodbye to summer and hello to autumn at our Fall Family Day! \nAs the new season unfolds\, the fall days\, touched by less sunlight\, wake up new colors in nature! When the green in leaves begins to fade\, new colors like red\, yellow\, orange and fuchsias are revealed! The warm glow of sunlight and rich palette of colors make for a truly beautiful season! \nSurrounded by artists’ studios in our main garden\, families will dive deep into the colors of the season at our watercolor paper lantern workshop! We’ll explore blending fall colors on our lantern canvas\, and then capture the fading daylight of fall by decorating our lanterns with glittering papers\, shiny confetti\, golden sequins\, wonderful beads and iridescent ribbons! \nA&H’s Maitland Art Center was originally built in 1937 as an artists’ colony and named the Research Studio. Our founder\, artist J. Andre’ Smith\, had a dream that all artists creating in this space would experiment with art\, and we can’t think of a more fun way to celebrate fall by playing with the colors and golden light of the season! \nWe’ll have more surprises too\, like a fall themed scavenger hunt\, face painting and free admission to all of our museums! The family art workshop is recommended for ages 4 and up\, and under 4 with parental help! \nSpace and art supplies are limited\, so reserve a spot for your family today! \nOur Fall Family Day is free of charge and sponsored by Massey Services. \nClick here to get tickets>>

SUMMARY:A&H Conversations: Katie Benson on André Smith
DESCRIPTION:A&H Conversations invites lifetime learners like you to discuss fascinating topics anchored in Central Florida history\, arts\, and culture. This month we take a deeper look at our founder\, J. André Smith\, his prolific artworks\, and the eclectic vision that drove him to create the Maitland Art Center\, with A&H Exhibitions Manager Katie Benson. \nJ. André Smith was an architect\, a theatre professional\, master printmaker\, painter\, sculptor\, and so much more. A decorated veteran of World War I\, Smith’s leg was amputated as a result of an injury suffered during his military service. In the late 1930s he determined that Maitland\, FL was the ideal place for his dream of an artists’ retreat devoted to creative experimentation and began construction of his Research Center (known today as the Maitland Art Center). Now home to the Art & History Museums of Maitland\, the Maitland Art Center is Central Florida’s only National Historic Landmark\, renowned for its unique architecture and more than 2\,000 sculptures\, carvings\, and murals. \nSmith was a passionate forward-thinker in his time\, practicing a form of Episcopalian Christianity inspired by Humanist ideals and the many philosophies and religions he encountered during his travels. He was outspoken against racial bias\, featuring images of multiracial citrus workers as well as nearby Eatonville\, FL (one of the first self-governing all-black municipalities in the USA) prominently in his work and befriending famous author/anthropologist Zora Neale Hurston\, creating a sketch for her vision of a “Folklore Village.” In his lifetime\, Smith not only pushed boundaries with his own art\, but encouraged many other influential artists to do the same. \nA&H Conversations occur during our Last Wednesday event hours\, which run from 5:30-8pm. Every Last Wednesday we open up after hours\, provide a bar\, and offer free admission to our gallery. \nAfter receiving her bachelor’s degree in Art History and International Relations from the University of North Florida\, Katie Benson began her time at the A%H as a Museum Attendant. Benson quickly became enamored with the history and artistry of the Art Center\, and quickly began personal research projects to discover more. Five years later\, Benson now holds the title of Exhibitions Manager and is charged with the care of the permanent collection\, assisting the Curatorial team\, and the management of the priceless history the campus holds. \nRegister here (it’s free!) >>

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: (Un)Common Thread
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the opening of this new exhibition with music by DJ Nigel John\, Ceylon Hut food truck\, a cash bar\, and our featured artists\, on our beautiful National Historic Landmark campus! This exhibition will feature Eugene Ofori Agyei\, Alisha McCurdy Holzman\, and Jacob Z. Wan. Plus\, current Artist in Residence Soude Dadras will have an open studio during the event. Get your ticket here>> \nAbout the exhibition: (Un)Common Thread showcases the works of three significant and culturally diverse emerging and mid-career artists working in the medium of fiber art. Eugene \n\nOfori Agyei is a ceramic sculptural artist and an educator originally from Ghana\, now living in Gainesville\, and a recent winner of The Pathways 2022: The Carlos Malamud prize from the Rollins Museum. He describes his work as\, “memories\, without voice yet want to be heard. I reveal these unspoken stories of beauty\, migration\, and my cultural history through my sculpture”.\nThe next artist is Alisha McCurdy Holzman. Primarily embodying sculptural and installation forms\, McCurdy’s art borrows craft-based techniques that are familiar to Appalachia and the coal fields of Western Pennsylvania\, where she grew up.\nJacob Z. Wan is the third artist. He defines himself as a contemporary book artist\, crafting conceptual books and poetic fiber art to explore his identity\, sexuality\, and relationships as a Chinese gay man in the United States.\n\nThe artists’ unique personal stories and histories play a major role in the exhibition. The resulting conversations between their works will examine the overlap between environmental and social issues as well as the wide-ranging possibilities and applications of their overlapping mediums. SUMMARY:(Un)Common Thread
DESCRIPTION:(Un)Common Thread showcases the works of three significant and culturally diverse emerging and mid-career artists working in the medium of fiber art. Plan your visit here>> \n\nEugene Ofori Agyei is a ceramic sculptural artist and an educator originally from Ghana\, now living in Gainesville\, and a recent winner of The Pathways 2022: The Carlos Malamud prize from the Rollins Museum. He describes his work as\, “memories\, without voice yet want to be heard. I reveal these unspoken stories of beauty\, migration\, and my cultural history through my sculpture”. \nThe next artist is Alisha McCurdy Holzman. Primarily embodying sculptural and installation forms\, McCurdy’s art borrows craft-based techniques that are familiar to Appalachia and the coal fields of Western Pennsylvania\, where she grew up.\nJacob Z. Wan is the third artist. He defines himself as a contemporary book artist\, crafting conceptual books and poetic fiber art to explore his identity\, sexuality\, and relationships as a Chinese-American gay man. \n\nThe artists’ unique personal stories and histories play a major role in the exhibition. The resulting conversations between their works will examine the overlap between environmental and social issues as well as the wide-ranging possibilities and applications of their overlapping mediums.

SUMMARY:Automatic Drawing
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, December 9 |  11am-2pm \nInstructor: Ryan Price \nLocation: Maitland Art Center\, Studio 10 \nCost: $65 + $10 material fees. \nMaterials fees must be paid in cash directly to the instructor\, and are due on the day of the workshop. \nNo drawing experience is required! Open to all levels! Automatic drawing is a technique named and commonly used by the Surrealists. It involves the artist directly and randomly moving the pen or drawing tool with no preconceived image or plan. This technique is similar to what writers termed\, “Stream of consciousness” writing\, where through a mental shift drawing automatically allows participants let their subconscious flow through their hands. \nParticipants will be encouraged to draw their heart’s content out\, and learn to unshackle themselves from hesitation. We control the anxiety of being confronted by a blank sheet using a low-stakes process like drawing. Participants will learn how to engage their subconscious as a means of express what lies under the surface of the mind. Students will create many drawings using different materials to get them out of their heads and their comfort zones. You will learn about processes like automatism\, frottage\, and responsive drawing. \nTake your drawing utensil and move with rhythm or erraticism\, write your name obsessively until it becomes maddening marks. Twist and turn the pencil or pen with the delicacy and grace of an angel and the brutish wickedness of a demon. Use this low-stakes practice as a way to get more comfortable with a material or tool. The drawing doesn’t ever have to be  finished\, it can be left as a single deposit of personal memory. There is no right or wrong way to practice automatic drawing. \nRegister Here>> \n*Graphic Art by Ryan Price

SUMMARY:A&H Book Club: December Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Make new friends at the A&H Book Club! Join A&H Director of Advancement Jessi VanPelt every other month to share your opinions on fascinating topics in the realms of art and history in our beautiful Mural Room. At the end of each meeting\, we’ll vote on what book to read together next. RSVP for our December meeting here >> \nThis month we will discuss The Slip: The New York City Street That Changed American Art Forever\, by Prudence Peiffer. “For just over a decade\, from 1956 to 1967\, a collection of dilapidated former sail-making warehouses clustered at the lower tip of Manhattan became the quiet epicenter of the art world. Coenties Slip\, a dead-end street near the water\, was home to a circle of wildly talented and varied artists that included Robert Indiana\, Ellsworth Kelly\, Agnes Martin\, James Rosenquist\, Delphine Seyrig\, Lenore Tawney\, and Jack Youngerman. As friends and inspirations to one another\, they created a unique community for unbridled creative expression and experimentation\, and the works they made at the Slip would go on to change the course of American art.” \n“Just a note to say a big THANK YOU for book club. It is such an oasis for me in the desert of my life!” -Beth\, Book Club member \nBook Club meetings are just $5 (which includes refreshments). Space is limited so you must register in advance. If you’re not a current A&H member\, you must join or renew before Book Club date.
