SUMMARY:Summer Evenings with André
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that J. André Smith\, founder of the Maitland Art Center\, was not only an architect and artist\, but also a playwright?! This Summer\, the A&H — in partnership with Central Florida Community Arts — will regale you with his tales of romance\, murder\, comedy and drama! Three Saturday evenings of play readings will be offered\, each followed by a Q&A session. All proceeds benefit the Art & History Museums – Maitland’s National Historic Landmark. \nPlease note\, due to the adult themes\, these plays are recommended for ages 13 and up\, with parental discretion. \n[plsc_divider color=”black” style=”solid”] \nThe first of the three play readings (July 14) was a fabulous treat. — one of the attendees had this to say:\n“Tonight I attended a Summer Evening with André…I was embarrassed that as a 23 year Maitland resident it has taken me this long to spend an evening with André Smith. What an incredible man\, artist\, writer\, thinker\, creator Smith was… Director Kaitlyn Harrington and her band of actors did an outrageous job of bringing to life such edge-of-your-seat\, funny\, deplorable\, sad human life stories that incredibly could all be any of our life stories. I found myself sucked into each character and each act.” -Margaret \n[plsc_divider color=”black” style=”solid”] \nAUGUST 4: \nUnnamed WWI Play: A soldier\, left for dead\, returns to reveal the truth about another man who has been labeled a war hero. \nPumpkin Pie – A Shadow Play: When two children go looking for a pumpkin\, they encounter a wicked witch. This charming tale of adventure and dismemberment will be sure to delight your children. (If they are age 13 & up!) \nThe Bandit of the Var: A medieval tale of a prince who has lost his throne\, and the woman who can help him regain it. Sure\, he kidnapped her\, and yes\, she’s engaged to his brother\, but all is fair in love and war\, right? \nAugust 4th’s readings directed by Kaitlyn Harrington | Stage directions read by CC Smith & Kendall Smith\nUnnamed WWI Play cast: Nicholas D’Alessandro\, Jim Cundiff\, Holland Hayes\, Stelson Telfort\, Donald Johnston\, and Austin Humphrey\nPumpkin Pie\, A Shadow Play cast: Kaitlin Elizabeth Baxter\, Donald Johnston\, Ana Eligio\, and Missy Barnes\nThe Bandit of the Var cast: Josh Melendez\, James Blaisdell\, Austin Humphrey\, Arius West\, Gabriella Bivona\, and Donald Johnston \n[plsc_divider color=”black” style=”solid”] \nAUGUST 25: \n \nThe Golden Tomb: On a journey to leave New York for a digging party in Egypt with the assistance of an Egyptian Prince\, what could go wrong? This group is faced with a battle between power and love. Who will end up lovers and who will love betray?\n \n[plsc_divider color=”black” style=”solid”] \nAdvance pricing:\nSeries (all 3 performances)\, A&H Members  $60\nSeries (all 3 performances)\, Non-Members   $70\nSingle Performance\, A&H Members   $22\nSingle Performance\, Non-Members    $25 \nAt-The-Door Admission:\nSingle Performance\, A&H Members   $25\nSingle Performance\, Non-Members    $28 \n50% of your ticket price is tax deductible as a donation! \n[plsc_button url=”https://artandhistory.secure.force.com/ticket/#sections_a0F1H00000CmqWHUAZ” target=”_self” color=”gray” style=”flat” radius=”square” size=”lg”]Click here to purchase tickets[/plsc_button] \n[plsc_divider color=”black” style=”solid”]

SUMMARY:Artist Critique & Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Every year Art31 brings a nationally celebrated art professional to Maitland Art Center to focus on artist development through the A&H’s Artist Critique & Conversation program.  The public is welcome to attend and learn how a well-established professional evaluates artistic skill\, process and content. The Art31 critique is a free portfolio review by Nomi Dale Kleinman\, professor in Textile Surface Design at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. A talk on Slow Weaving by Nomi at 6:00 will be followed by the Critique at 7:00. \nThe slow movement is emerging out of a cultural shift away from the fast consumption. Slow Design offers a more hands-on approach to making objects\, and asks designers to make conscious choices about materials and processes. It also reconsiders how we relate to objects in the first place. Nomi Kleinman began her career designing fabric for the textile industry. After years of teaching and exploring sustainability and mindfulness she has embarked on a new path for developing woven textiles. This talk will introduce the Slow Design movement and trace the trajectory of Kleinman’s shift from mass market production to boutique\, hand-woven textiles through a recent project that appeared in New York Fashion Week. \n***CALL TO ARTISTS***\nFree portfolio review by an established leader in fiber arts as a part of the A&H’s Art31 Artist Critique & Conversation. Open to fiber artists and textile/fashion designers.\nShare a portfolio selection (a body of work or samples of range of works) for viewing\, professional review and public discussion. To be considered\, please email images of completed work\, artist bio & statement\, and link to artist website to education@artandhistory.org. This annual opportunity has benefited emerging\, and established artists as they seek to raise visibility of their artwork\, processes\, and build connections.

SUMMARY:Art31: Fiber
DESCRIPTION:Edward Was Too Young to Go to War\, by Carrie Sieh \nFor 31 days in March\, contemporary artists from across the U.S. will come to the Art & History Museums – Maitland (A&H) to create new works and engage the public in the creative process. In the spirit of experimentation and collaboration in modern art\, Art31 is a series of exhibits and happenings that honor A&H’s history as the Research Studio\, which welcomed a handful of notable artists from the northeast each winter from 1937-1959\, allowing them to practice new artistic styles. \nThe centerpiece exhibition of Art31: Fiber\, on view March 2 – April 22\, 2018 in the Maitland Art Center galleries\, features works by Alisha McCurdy\, Hye Shin\, and Carrie Sieh. This group of internationally recognized artists creates with cloth\, paper\, and other fibrous materials\, and use traditional techniques like stitching\, quilting\, and crocheting\, in innovative and provocative ways to engage with their environments. Also featured during Art31 2018 are local artists Jack Fields and Suzanne Oberholtzer. \nEmbrace the Hope\, by Hye Shin \nFeatured artists: \nAlisha McCurdy – McCurdy will create a site-specific installation of a landscape in Maitland Art Center’s Galleries 1 & 2\, inspired by phosphate mining in the Bone Valley of SW Florida\, and its impact on the Peace River Watershed.  Contrasting a mine against an unadulterated Florida wetland\, thread drawings of flora and fauna will be layered within\, highlighting the disparities of the landscape and the vulnerability of wetlands. Alisha’s artwork seeks to share respect for labor and making\, representing the harsh conditions in the Appalachian mine fields where her father worked. \nHye Shin – Shin’s Embrace the Hope large sculptural installation expresses balancing the joys of motherhood with a deep appreciation of the sacrifices necessary for nurturing life. Featured in Galleries 1 & 3 and throughout the grounds of A&H’s Maitland Art Center\, Shin’s work will acknowledge an inspired connection to nature. \nCarrie Sieh – Sieh is a mixed media artist based in Miami\, whose mediums include painting\, fiber\, photography\, and repurposed materials. Her practice focuses primarily on the roles of technology\, psychology\, and political economy in human behavior. Diverse applications of Sieh’s work will be featured in Gallery 4. \nArt31: Fiber is presented by:\n \n  \n  \nVisit the Plan Your Visit page for hours & pricing.

SUMMARY:Haunted Art Center Tours
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a paranormal tour of the A&H’s Maitland Art Center campus. Hear ghost stories and be guided around “one of the most haunted spots in Central Florida” (according to the Orlando Weekly). \nOn this tour\, you will hear the history and ghost stories of the facility from its staff and students.  The Maitland Art Center\, originally named the Research Studio\, was built by artist J. André Smith during the final years of his life\, from 1937-1959. The high walls of the center were created to keep curious minds from encroaching on Smith’s territory during his life\, before being officially opened to the public many years after his death. A&H staff still feel the presence of André 58 years later\, keeping an eye on the grounds and letting it be known when he is not happy. \nTOUR DETAILS: \n\nTour times every thirty minutes from 6:00pm – 9:00pm. \nTours are first-come-first-serve\, and limited to 14 guests at a time to ensure a great experience.\nA cash bar (wine & craft beer) and an art making activity will be available while you wait for your tour! \nMost of the tour will be conducted outdoors\, so please wear comfortable walking shoes and proper clothing.\nWe ask that groups with children keep in mind that this tour will be conducted at night where the center will be very dark with lots of dark corners and paths.\nPlease feel welcome to bring any cameras or paranormal research tools with you; we do ask that camera operators be mindful of the disruption of flash on the tour. A&H tour guides will provide flashlights to visitors.\n\nAdmission: $4 A&H member; $5 Maitland resident; $6 all others (no advance sales)

SUMMARY:Drawing the Unseen: Artists Explore the Subconscious
DESCRIPTION:And Yet You Cannot Hold Them Down\, J. André Smith \nVisual artists have long sought to make visible that which is unseen\, to provide evidence to the wrestlings of their subconscious. Beginning with our earliest ancestors\, drawing — the technology of mark making — has been the most immediate method of this expression. This exhibition features the original surrealist watercolors by J. André Smith that became the illustrations in his 1936 book Art of the Subconscious. The adjoining galleries will showcase works on paper by artist who are all investigating aspects of the unseen. This diverse group will provide a comprehensive example of the disparate applications of drawing within the contemporary art world. Participating artists include: Matt Duke\, Ian Jones\, Anthony Deal and Kathryn Cellerini Moore. \nVisit the Tickets page for hours & pricing. \n
