SUMMARY:Kitchen Lithography Printing
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Ryan Price \nLocation: Maitland Art Center Studio 10 \nCost: $60 + $10 material fees. \nMaterials fees must be paid in cash directly to the instructor\, and are due on the day of the workshop. \nParticipants will be using household items to learn how to make lithography prints. Each participant will receive a sheet of aluminum foil mounted to a wooden board and a Sharpie to draw images on. Once students have finalized their image\, they will use Coca-Cola to “etch” the plate\, rinse with water\, dry\, and apply canola oil\, then buff it into the place. They can begin the inking to the plate\, run it through the press\, or create a rubbing with a wooden spoon. This workshop will provide participants with an idea of how the process of lithography works with a low-stakes and low-cost approach. Each person leaves with a new skill and a print. Open to all levels! \nRegister Here!

SUMMARY:Stories in Stone: A Walking Tour of the Maitland Art Center
DESCRIPTION:Step behind the gates of the Maitland Art Center and into a world shaped by vision\, imagination\, and legacy.\nThis one-hour guided tour takes you through the gardens and courtyards of a campus like no other—founded in the 1930s by American artist and architect J. André Smith as a haven for modern experimentation and creative freedom. \nClick here to reserve your tickets>>\nExperience the Tour\nAs your guide leads you through the campus\, you’ll trace the story of Smith’s life—from his childhood in Hong Kong to his service in World War I to the founding of the Maitland Art Center\, which he called “Espero\,” a Spanish word for hope. The result is a surreal\, immersive environment—at once spiritual\, exotic\, and modern—where over 2\,500 carvings\, sculptures\, and reliefs adorn nearly every surface. \nAlong the way\, you’ll learn about the community of artists who lived and worked here between the 1930s and 1950s—names like Milton Avery\, Ralston Crawford\, and Doris Lee—and how this hidden Florida enclave became one of the state’s most forward-thinking creative centers. \n\nIncluded with the Tour\n\nMaitland Art Center Gallery\nMaitland History Museum\nTelephone Museum\n\nTickets\n\n$4-$6 (includes 3 museums & grounds)\nFree for members\nSuitable for all ages; recommended for ages 13+\n\nClick here to reserve your tickets>>

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: The Situated Body
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the opening of Pangarap\, our newest exhibition\, featuring art by Jacobo Alonso\, with music by DJ Spreadsheets\, food from La Patrona Tacos & Birria House food truck\, and a cash bar on our beautiful National Historic Landmark campus! \n\nClick here to reserve your FREE tickets >>\n  \nAdmission\, to this event is FREE! However\, donations of any size are gratefully accepted with your order or at the event\, in order to support our many free community programs! \n\nAbout the Exhibition \nFrom soot on paper to felt\, The Situated Body\, an exhibition of the work of Mexican sculptor Jacobo Alonso\, redefines the classical depictions of the human form through contemporary materials. Alonso transforms traditional drawing and sculptural practices into expressive and tactile abstractions\, all referencing the configuration and movement of the human form. Inspired by both pre-Columbian traditions and the Art Center’s Mayan Revival architecture\, his work\, some created during his 2025 residency at A&H\, challenges assumptions about form\, identity\, and materiality. \nAlonso stated\, “Each body possesses its own geography and undergoes numerous inevitable mutations that reveal the genealogy of its image and form. It is a territory inherent to the individual\, tracing the constellation of their identity yet always appealing to an inherent instability”. \nThis exhibition is the first time that Alonso’s “fumage” works of soot on paper will be shown alongside his vibrant sculptural works of reconfigured felt. \n \n  \nAll 2025-26 free programs at A&H are supported by a grant from Duke Energy Foundation.

SUMMARY:Automatic Drawing
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Ryan Price \nLocation: Maitland Art Center Studio 10 \nCost: $60 + $5 material fees \nMaterials fees must be paid in cash directly to the instructor\, and are due on the day of the workshop. \nNo drawing experience is required! Open to all levels. Automatic drawing is a technique named by and commonly used by the Surrealists\, which involves the artist directly and randomly moving the pen or drawing tool with no preconceived image or plan. This technique is similar to what writers termed “Stream of consciousness” writing\, where\, through a mental shift\, drawing automatically allows participants to let their subconscious flow through their hands. \nParticipants will be encouraged to draw their hearts’ content out and learn to unshackle themselves from hesitation caused by the anxiety of being confronted by a blank sheet. Students will create many drawings using many different materials to get them out of their heads and out of their comfort zones. Students will learn about processes like automatism\, frottage\, and responsive drawing. The drawing doesn’t ever have to be quote-on-quote finished; it can be left as a single deposit of personal memory. There is no right or wrong way to practice automatic drawing. \nRegister Here!

SUMMARY:Artist Talk: with Artist in Residence Mary Graham
DESCRIPTION:A&H invites lifetime learners like you to discuss fascinating topics anchored in Central Florida history\, arts\, and culture. This artist talk will be led by Artist in Residence Mary Graham.\n\n\nGrab your FREE tickets here >>\n  \n\n  \nFor more information about our current exhibition The Situated Body featuring unseen works by Jacobo Alonso: \nFrom soot on paper to felt\, The Situated Body\, an exhibition of the work of Mexican sculptor Jacobo Alonso\, redefines the classical depictions of the human form through contemporary materials. \nThis evening event is presented during our monthly Last Wednesday hours\, when we open our gallery free of charge with a cash bar from 5:30-8pm. Learn more here. \n\n  \nFunding for this program and all 2025-26 free programs at A&H are supported by a grant from Duke Energy Foundation.
