Andre Smith’s Maitland Art Center reliefs. On day one\, you will tour the Maitland Art Center and select one of Smith’s reliefs to replicate. Then you will create a miniature version of the relief in wax sculpture and make a silicone rubber mold. On day two\, you will mix and pour acrylic into your mold for curing. With a focus in acrylic painting\, his work offers expressive mark making and an underlaying and over-layering of colors that aim to blur the line between naturalism and abstraction. DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, April 16 | 10 am – 2 pm \nInstructor: Marion Fague-Bass \nLocation: Cottage at Lake Lily \nCost: $65 + $55 materials fee \nIn this class you will learn how to use two-part silicone molding compound to make reusable molds from natural plant materials. You may bring items from your own yard\, or forage the Art Center grounds for little lovelies. Small leaves and tiny flowers work best – don’t forget weeds\, they have amazing shapes and textures! (Don’t worry if you’re feeling clueless\, the instructor will have plenty available for you to choose from!) After making the mold\, you will receive 10 grams of fine silver metal clay and learn how to create charms for bracelets\, earrings or pendants. Your pieces will be fired after class and available for pick up the following week. Included in the materials fee is your choice of one (1) sterling silver chain\, one (1) leather cord with SS clasp\, one (1) pair SS earwires\, OR one (1) SS lobster claw spring clasp. Additional chains\, earwires\, CZs\, etc. will be available for purchase at a modest price. DESCRIPTION:CORPUS DELICTI\, a solo exhibition by Jessica Caldas\, runs May 21 – September 25\, 2022 in the Maitland Art Center galleries (Extended by one week!) \nThis exhibition features the work of Jessica Caldas\, a Florida-based Puerto Rican artist and advocate. Visitors navigate the space in an immersive experience that mirrors the complexities of the stories and issues being explored\, focusing on the generational struggles and triumphs of women. Caldas’ first solo museum exhibition incorporates paintings\, drawings\, collage\, performance\, and enormous soft sculpture installations — including a new sculpture\, Milk Bath (Graces)\, created specifically for the space. The exhibition is complemented by writings by women from the artist’s life – family\, members\, mentors\, and fellow artists who made an impact on the body of work\, as well as artifacts from her artistic process. \nThe exhibition title translates from Latin as the “body of the crime”. Legally the term means that requisite elements of a crime\, such as a body\, must be provided before an individual can be convicted. This title was chosen because the art of Jessica Caldas seeks to provide evidence of injustices that often go unspoken. You will receive 20 grams of fine silver metal clay\, and have a variety of mold shapes to choose from. This is meant to be a small (approximately 1” cubed)\, whimsical trinket box\, maybe something to keep a child’s tooth\, a lock of hair\, a coin from your honeymoon to Italy\, the button from your mother’s favorite dress… It is meant to be fun. And you will have fun creating it. A large assortment of textures and molds will be available. You will complete your box to the dried greenware stage. She’ll share about her background and current projects while we share a nosh\, then invite everyone in to visit her colorful studio and view her works in progress. A cash (and credit) bar will be open. \n**Note: this event is rain or shine. In the event of rain\, we will be in the Germaine Marvel Building at 210 W. Packwood Ave. instead of in the main garden.** \nThere are many options for dinner take-out in downtown Maitland\, just across the street from A&H. Please note that we are a nut-free campus due to allergies. \nCarole d’Inverno grew up in Belgium and Italy\, and currently resides in Brooklyn\, New York. At this event\, Carole is going to sit down for an intimate revealing of her studio practice and working method. Her fascinating process of translating in depth investigations of local histories into visual information will be expanded upon. \nShe states about her process\, “To prepare for a new series I visit the local communities. I take in the scenery and spend time with locals. I listen to stories\, go to museums and art centers\, look at monuments\, read at the local library\, and even peruse restaurant menus! I consult maps\, photos\, relevant books\, and fill sketchbooks with notes and drawings. A unique picture starts developing in my mind. In the studio my intuition takes the lead and I let the facts\, places\, and local stories coalesce in my mind. The data is humanized. Paintings and drawings naturally reflect the community\, and its people. Each new series becomes part of the whole and teaches me more. We all have stories to tell.”
