SUMMARY:CORPUS DELICTI
DESCRIPTION:CORPUS DELICTI\, a solo exhibition by Jessica Caldas\, runs May 21 – September 25\, 2022 in the Maitland Art Center galleries (Extended by one week!) \nThis exhibition features the work of Jessica Caldas\, a Florida-based Puerto Rican artist and advocate. Visitors navigate the space in an immersive experience that mirrors the complexities of the stories and issues being explored\, focusing on the generational struggles and triumphs of women. Caldas’ first solo museum exhibition incorporates paintings\, drawings\, collage\, performance\, and enormous soft sculpture installations — including a new sculpture\, Milk Bath (Graces)\, created specifically for the space. The exhibition is complemented by writings by women from the artist’s life – family\, members\, mentors\, and fellow artists who made an impact on the body of work\, as well as artifacts from her artistic process. \nThe exhibition title translates from Latin as the “body of the crime”. Legally the term means that requisite elements of a crime\, such as a body\, must be provided before an individual can be convicted. This title was chosen because the art of Jessica Caldas seeks to provide evidence of injustices that often go unspoken. The exhibition becomes a healing space for both artist and viewer — embracing joy\, resilience\, tenderness\, and community care. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n The Matriarch’s Timeline\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n

SUMMARY:Art al fresco: A Conversation with Carole
DESCRIPTION:Bring a blanket and your picnic dinner to the A&H gardens to meet our Artist in Residence Carole D’Inverno! She’ll share about her background and current projects while we share a nosh\, then invite everyone in to visit her colorful studio and view her works in progress. A cash (and credit) bar will be open. \n**Note: this event is rain or shine. In the event of rain\, we will be in the Germaine Marvel Building at 210 W. Packwood Ave. instead of in the main garden.** \nThere are many options for dinner take-out in downtown Maitland\, just across the street from A&H. Please note that we are a nut-free campus due to allergies. \nCarole d’Inverno grew up in Belgium and Italy\, and currently resides in Brooklyn\, New York. At this event\, Carole is going to sit down for an intimate revealing of her studio practice and working method. Her fascinating process of translating in depth investigations of local histories into visual information will be expanded upon. \nShe states about her process\, “To prepare for a new series I visit the local communities. I take in the scenery and spend time with locals. I listen to stories\, go to museums and art centers\, look at monuments\, read at the local library\, and even peruse restaurant menus! I consult maps\, photos\, relevant books\, and fill sketchbooks with notes and drawings. A unique picture starts developing in my mind. In the studio my intuition takes the lead and I let the facts\, places\, and local stories coalesce in my mind. The data is humanized. Paintings and drawings naturally reflect the community\, and its people. Each new series becomes part of the whole and teaches me more. We all have stories to tell.”

SUMMARY:The Pendulum of Pride: A History of LGBTQ Resilience in Central Florida
DESCRIPTION:Dive into the history of LGBTQ community\, pride\, and protest in Central Florida with Ph.D. Candidate David Matteson! \nTo reserve your spot for this lecture\, please register here >> \nAs part of the Art & History Museum’s continuing lecture series on the history of Florida\, this lecture will survey the history of the LGBTQ community within the Central Florida region by focusing on moments of progress\, resistance\, and resilience. In the wake of the tragic shooting at PULSE nightclub in 2016\, demonstrations of love and support centralized around the LGBTQ community. Yet no matter how many rainbow flags fly in the City Beautiful\, queer individuals have not always been welcomed. Our history includes moments when showing one’s pride sparked protest\, and political progress prompted regressive discrimination. By turning to the past\, we may better understand the LGBTQ community’s resilience — a quality for which we should all be proud. \nThe lecture will draw upon the collection of the LGBTQ History Museum of Central Florida\, learn more about this organization at floridalgbtqmuseum.org/. \nDavid Matteson is a past Board President of the LGBTQ History Museum of Central Florida\, an organization founded in 2005 and dedicated to collecting\, preserving\, and exhibiting the region’s queer history. He is also the Associate Curator of Education and Outreach at the Orlando Museum of Art and a doctoral candidate in the Texts and Technology program at the University of Central Florida. \nThis event coincides with A&H’s monthly Last Wednesday event\, which offers free gallery admission and a cash bar from 5:30 to 8 pm—you may RSVP here. A complimentary 45-minute gallery tour by Chief Curator Dan L. Hess begins at 5:30 pm. Space for these tours is limited\, so please pre-register here.

SUMMARY:Paving Roads and Disappearing Orange Groves: Development in Old Florida
DESCRIPTION:As part of the Art & History Museums of Maitland’s continuing lecture series on the history of Florida\, Diana Reigelsperger presents “Paving Roads and Disappearing Orange Groves: Memory and Development in Old Florida.” Explore the rapid development of Central Florida from the 20s-60s\, with a focus on how highways affected Eatonville and Maitland! \nTo attend this free lecture\, please register here >> \nThis presentation will address the history of development in Florida during part of the era that J. Andre Smith (founder of the Maitland Art Center\, home of A&H) was painting\, roughly the 1930s to the 1960s. Between the emergence of the National Highway System in the 1920s and the Interstate Highway System in the 1950s\, Central Florida grew in dramatic ways. Growth brought new opportunities for local communities\, but also negative effects. A closer look at the social and economic impact of paving roads and building interstates for communities like Maitland and Eatonville reveals the complex history of politics and development in Central Florida. The talk will also reflect on how those changes are represented in popular memory and historical curation. \nDiana Reigelsperger is an associate professor of history at Seminole State College. She specializes in the history of Florida and the colonial Southeastern United States. Her research focuses on interethnic relations and trade across the borders of the Spanish and British empires. Her most recent publication is “Networks of Diplomacy and Trade in the Contested Florida Borderlands\,” in The Latin Americanist. She received her Ph.D. in Latin American history from the University of Florida in 2013. Currently\, she teaches courses on U.S. history\, the history of Florida\, and the history of Latin America.

SUMMARY:A&H Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Make new friends at the A&H Members-Only Book Club! Join A&H Director of Advancement Jessi VanPelt every other month in our scenic Cottage at Lake Lily to share your opinions on fascinating topics in the realms of art and history. At the end of each meeting\, we’ll vote on what book to read together next. \nAt our first meeting we’ll discuss How to Enjoy Art: A Guide for Everyone by Ben Street\, a lively guide to rediscovering the pleasures of art. How to Enjoy Art: A Guide for Everyone debunks the pervasive idea that specialist knowledge is required to understand and appreciate art. Using examples from around the world and throughout art history\, Ben Street demonstrates a handful of strategies to enhance the experience of viewing art works. \nWe will have a couple copies of this book in our Museum Store\, or you can find this title on Amazon\, as well as many online used bookstores. Choose us as your Amazon Smile charity and we’ll receive 0.5% of all your Amazon purchases as a donation. \nBook Club meetings are just $5 (which includes snacks and sodas). Space is limited so you must register in advance. If you’re not a current A&H member\, you must join or renew before Book Club date. Membership payments cannot be accepted at the event. \nIf you have any questions or need to verify your membership status\, contact Jessi at jvanpelt@artandhistory.org.
