SUMMARY:Virtual Artist Talk with Wanda Raimundi-Ortiz
DESCRIPTION:Photo by Juliet Romeo DiIenno \nWanda Raimundi-Ortiz is an internationally-recognized\, award-winning multidisciplinary artist\, UCF art professor\, and A&H Artist-in-Action. Her work has been featured around the world\, including at the National Portrait Gallery\, and most recently\, in the Maitland Art Center’s Spring 2021 exhibition: Love & Compassion: Images of Mother and Child. Join her on Zoom to hear the motivation behind her work\, which focuses on cultural and social constructs. \nRegister for this free virtual event here \nAbout Wanda Raimundi-Ortiz\nBorn in the Bronx and of Puerto Rican descent\, Wanda Raimundi-Ortiz studied illustration at the Fashion Institute of Technology and later earned her MFA from Rutgers University. Her most notable works involve performance art\, such as “Ask Chuleta\,” a web series created by and starring Raimundi-Ortiz as the titular character\, deconstructing contemporary art concepts. “Reinas” is another notable work\, where Raimundi-Ortiz confronts the traditional archetype of queens and creates her own versions. In her performance series Pietà\, Raimundi-Ortiz draws on Michelangelo’s renowned depiction of the Virgin Mary\, but replaces the dying Jesus in her arms with members of the public – a mournful response to the ongoing global crises. Today\, Raimundi-Ortiz resides in Orlando and teaches at the University of Central Florida. She is part of the Artists-in-Action program at the Art & History Museums of Maitland.

DESCRIPTION:Palm Coast-based artists Richlin Burnett-Ryan and Weldon Ryan are both featured in “Love & Compassion: Images of Mother and Child\,” the Maitland Art Center’s Spring 2021 exhibition. Join the couple at this virtual artist’s talk\, held over Zoom\, as they dive into the inspirations for their works\, their background\, and their ties to the theme of Mother and Child. Weldon Ryan will focus specifically on his portraiture techniques during this talk. \nSign Up >> \n  \nAbout the Artists\n \nRichlin Burnett-Ryan was born in Guyana and moved to Brooklyn\, New York as a child. She studied graphic design at the Rochester Institute of Technology and at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. Together with her husband\, Weldon Ryan\, she started a small graphic design business and also worked as an art director until the couple and their children relocated to Palm Coast\, Florida in 2004. Burnett-Ryan saw this move as the perfect time to focus on her art. Since moving to Florida\, Burnett-Ryan continues to work as a graphic designer and artist\, and she serves as an Exhibition Curator at Bethune-Cookman University. \n  \n  \n  \n \nWeldon Ryan came to the US from Trinidad and Tobago as a child\, growing up in the Bronx. He studied art at SUNY New Paltz and the Fashion Institute of New York\, and in 1989 he joined the NYPD\, becoming the first African-American appointed to the Composite Artist Unit. During this time\, he continued to paint at his studio in DUMBO\, Brooklyn\, creating commercial illustrations for magazines. Ryan retired from the NYPD in 2004 and relocated his family to Palm Coast\, Florida\, where he and his wife Richlin decided to dedicate more time to their artistic pursuits. In 2011\, Ryan was awarded the title of Flagler County Artist of the Year.

SUMMARY:Studio Conversation with Wade Schaming
DESCRIPTION:Artist Wade Schaming was A&H’s Artist-in-Residence in March 2020\, with his residency getting cut short as the Covid-19 pandemic began to shut down travel to his home of New York. While Schaming is still unable to return to Florida to complete his residency\, he will be joining our staff for a virtual Studio Conversation to talk about how his work has changed over the last year\, his unique process of creating sculptures from found objects\, and more. \nThis virtual event is free\, but donations are welcome and appreciated. \nSign Up >> \n  \nAbout Wade Schaming\nWade Schaming (b. 1984; Pittsburgh\, PA) lives and works in New York City. His sculptures are painstakingly assembled solely through processes of stacking. The materials remain unchanged – used as is/found – and are unfixed to each other: as such\, he creates delicate juxtapositions perilously balanced\, like thought given concrete form. From discarded and forgotten objects\, which memorialize hope\, the assembled forms aspire to return dignity to the bearer and evoke empathy in the viewer. This process is site-specific and confined to the present moment: because he works only with found and discarded materials (nothing used is purchased)\, his pieces reflect their origins while reinforcing a desire to create impermanence. \nSchaming studied at the University of Pittsburgh\, Pittsburgh\, PA (BA 2006) and the School of Visual Arts\, New York\, NY (MFA 2010). His work has been exhibited throughout the United States\, including at the Bronx Museum of the Arts\, Bronx\, NY\, Field Projects\, New York\, NY\, The Museum of Human Achievement\, Austin\, TX and Primary Projects\, Miami\, FL. He has been profiled/interviewed by Paper Magazine\, International Sculpture Center and The New York Times. Residency awards include the Artist in the Marketplace (AIM) program\, Bronx\, NY (2012)\, Residency 108\, Clermont\, NY (2014)\, the Keyholder Residency at the Lower East Side Printshop\, New York\, NY (2015)\, Yaddo\, Saratoga Springs\, NY (2016)\, Constance Saltonstall Foundation for the Arts\, Ithaca\, NY (2017)\, The Edward F. Albee Foundation\, Montauk\, NY (2017)\, Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts\, Nebraska City\, NE (2017) and Jentel Foundation\, Banner\, WY (2018). \n  \nLearn more about the Artist-in-Residence program here.
