SUMMARY:Love & Compassion: Images of Mother and Child
DESCRIPTION:Artwork by Jules André Smith \nThe theme of mother and child has been explored throughout art history and is often charged with strong emotions. Through this motif\, motherhood has been canonized\, elevated\, and idealized over centuries. Since the Renaissance\, artists have made muses of their mothers\, or paid homage to the Christian representation of Mary and Jesus. In this contemporary show\, selected Florida-based artists reflect on the time-honored themes of motherhood\, unconditional love\, and sacrifice in a show that is at once traditional and edgy. \nFeaturing works by:\nTaylor Battle\nRichlin Burnett-Ryan\nJessica Caldas\nHerman LeRoy Emmet\nEileen Hernandez\nRobert Hoekstra\nTaymon Loring-Smith\nWanda Raimundi-Ortiz\nRenato Rampolla\nWeldon Ryan\nJules André Smith \nThis exhibition is sponsored by The Grafton Family \n  \n  \nView photos from the exhibition opening reception below!

SUMMARY:Studio Conversation with Wade Schaming
DESCRIPTION:Artist Wade Schaming was A&H’s Artist-in-Residence in March 2020\, with his residency getting cut short as the Covid-19 pandemic began to shut down travel to his home of New York. While Schaming is still unable to return to Florida to complete his residency\, he will be joining our staff for a virtual Studio Conversation to talk about how his work has changed over the last year\, his unique process of creating sculptures from found objects\, and more. \nThis virtual event is free\, but donations are welcome and appreciated. \nSign Up >> \n  \nAbout Wade Schaming\nWade Schaming (b. 1984; Pittsburgh\, PA) lives and works in New York City. His sculptures are painstakingly assembled solely through processes of stacking. The materials remain unchanged – used as is/found – and are unfixed to each other: as such\, he creates delicate juxtapositions perilously balanced\, like thought given concrete form. From discarded and forgotten objects\, which memorialize hope\, the assembled forms aspire to return dignity to the bearer and evoke empathy in the viewer. This process is site-specific and confined to the present moment: because he works only with found and discarded materials (nothing used is purchased)\, his pieces reflect their origins while reinforcing a desire to create impermanence. \nSchaming studied at the University of Pittsburgh\, Pittsburgh\, PA (BA 2006) and the School of Visual Arts\, New York\, NY (MFA 2010). His work has been exhibited throughout the United States\, including at the Bronx Museum of the Arts\, Bronx\, NY\, Field Projects\, New York\, NY\, The Museum of Human Achievement\, Austin\, TX and Primary Projects\, Miami\, FL. He has been profiled/interviewed by Paper Magazine\, International Sculpture Center and The New York Times. Residency awards include the Artist in the Marketplace (AIM) program\, Bronx\, NY (2012)\, Residency 108\, Clermont\, NY (2014)\, the Keyholder Residency at the Lower East Side Printshop\, New York\, NY (2015)\, Yaddo\, Saratoga Springs\, NY (2016)\, Constance Saltonstall Foundation for the Arts\, Ithaca\, NY (2017)\, The Edward F. Albee Foundation\, Montauk\, NY (2017)\, Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts\, Nebraska City\, NE (2017) and Jentel Foundation\, Banner\, WY (2018). \n  \nLearn more about the Artist-in-Residence program here.
