Experience the sights and sounds of majestic Spain this summer as the Art and History Museums of Maitland presents On Seeing Segovia in the Maitland Art Center galleries. SUMMARY:Virtual Artist Talk with Rachel Livedalen
DESCRIPTION:Rachel Livedalen is A&H’s first Artist-in-Residence of 2021. Livedalen is an interdisciplinary artist whose work has been exhibited in galleries\, museums\, and other locations across the United States and internationally in Canada and Portugal. She arrived at the A&H on May 10th and has been busy working in her studio ever since. Join her on Zoom to hear about her work and how her residency has been going! \nRegister >> \n\nAbout the Artist \nRachel Livedalen earned her BA in Studio Art and Art History from the University of Virginia. In 2014\, she graduated with an MFA in Printmaking from the University of Iowa. Livedalen is currently based out of Fort Worth\, Texas where she is an Assistant Professor of Art at Texas Christian University. She is the current Artist-in-Residence at the Art & History Museums of Maitland. \nAs an artist\, her pieces have taken many forms including prints\, paintings\, sketches\, collages\, installations\, textiles\, and more. Livedalen describes her interdisciplinary work as “an analysis of representations of gender as reproduced throughout visual culture to better understand how perceptions of femininity have been constructed throughout history.” To explore this concept\, Livedalen draws inspiration from and appropriates different visual materials such as pictures of Greco-Roman sculptures\, pages of text from books\, Lisa Frank stickers\, stencils\, and even advertisements. From Rachel Livedalen\, “Combining canonical works of art history with kitsch femininity through pop culture references\, I create a dichotomy between high and low art. In so doing\, I call attention to the fetishizing of historic representations of women and beauty ideals prevalent throughout western history.” \nTo learn more about Rachel Livedalen and view some of her past works\, visit her website.
