SUMMARY:Maitland's Attic: A Journey Through A Small City's Past
DESCRIPTION:  \nThis exhibition is an interactive\, hands-on exploration into the history of Maitland and its surrounding areas! \n\nThere were a lot of things that did not happen in Maitland. There were no great battles fought on the soil\, nor was it home to any infamous individuals. The town was not the epicenter of any great social movements\, nor was it home to discoveries that would better humankind. Maitland was\, and continues to be\, a small town\, like so many others.\n\nThe story of Maitland is a story of seemingly ordinary people who lived through extraordinary times\, a place where people made their homes while dramatic events unfolded in other parts of the world. People labored here\, raised their families\, loved\, lost\, thought\, and created. The objects in the museum’s collection reflect the brightness of these lives against the backdrop of a changing and often troubled world.\n\n\nEach artifact tells a story specific to a place and time. They are the carriers of the memories of the people who owned them\, who felt that they were important enough to their own story to preserve them. Many of them are the prototypes of the objects that we use and hold dear today\, objects which will one day carry our own memories forward.\nWelcome to Maitland’s Attic\, a gathering place of the unique items that tell of Maitland’s past. From the everyday to the downright weird\, these objects and their stories open a window onto important moments throughout the history of the town\, and the people who called it home.\n\n\n\n¡Esta exhibición es interactivo y de primera mano adentro de la historia de Maitland y las áreas cercanas! \nEn Maitland no ocurrieron muchas cosas.

SUMMARY:A Return to Espero
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening reception on July 25\, 2025 from 6:30-9pm: Meet the curator\, enjoy live music by Shine\, food truck\, and a cash bar all just 15 minutes from downtown Orlando on our beautiful National Historic Landmark campus. Thank you to Red Bud Landscaping for sponsoring this exhibition opening! GET YOUR FREE TICKETS HERE >> \n  \nAbout the Exhibition \nFor nearly a century\, the story of the Maitland Art Center’s founding seemed complete. \nThen\, the letters surfaced. \nRecently discovered in the archives of the Curtis Institute of Music\, an extraordinary trove of correspondence between artist J. André Smith and philanthropist Mary Curtis Bok reveals a deeper\, more compelling origin\, born of a powerful creative alliance and a shared vision for what Central Florida’s art community could become. Illustrated by Smith and brimming with artistic and philosophical exchange\, these letters illuminate the origin of the Research Studio as never before. Paired with rarely seen works from Smith’s evolving career\, A Return to Espero reframes the birth of the site as a profound creative partnership. \nPlan your visit >> \nThis exhibition is generously supported by a grant from the Elizabeth Morse Genius Foundation

SUMMARY:Automatic Drawing
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Ryan Price \nLocation: Maitland Art Center Studio 10 \nCost: $60 + $5  material fees \nMaterials fees must be paid in cash directly to the instructor\, and are due on the day of the workshop. \nNo drawing experience is required! Open to all levels. Automatic drawing is a technique named by and used frequently by the Surrealists\, which involves the artist directly and randomly moving the pen or drawing tool with no preconceived image or plan. This technique is similar to what writers termed “Stream of consciousness” writing\, where\, through a mental shift\, drawing automatically allows participants to let their subconscious flow through their hands. Participants will be encouraged to draw their hearts’ content out and learn to unshackle themselves from hesitation caused by the anxiety of being confronted by a blank sheet. Students will create many drawings using many different materials to get them out of their heads and out of their comfort zones. Students will learn about processes like automatism\, frottage\, and responsive drawing. The drawing doesn’t ever have to be quote-on-quote finished\, it can be left as a single deposit of personal memory there is no right or wrong way to practice automatic drawing. \nRegister Here!

SUMMARY:Artist Talk: The History of Modernism
DESCRIPTION:During this artist talk\, Curator of Collections Katie Benson will explore the history of modernism and André Smith’s contributions to the movement as an artist\, architect\, and founder of the Research Studio. It situates Smith’s work within the broader context of early 20th-century modernist trends in America and abroad. \nGrab your FREE tickets here >>\nFor more information about our current exhibition A Return to Espero featuring the unseen art of J. André Smith: \nA Return to Espero unveils the profound metamorphosis of our founder\, J. André Smith\, whose near-death experience served as a catalyst for artistic reinvention. This exhibition chronicles the profound personal journey underlying the creation of the avant-garde haven of the Research Studio\, known today as the Maitland Art Center. On display for the first time publicly is an intimate collection of personal letters exchanged with his dear friend\, philanthropist Mary Curtis Bok\, many of which were illustrated by Smith himself. These artifacts along with a wide array of his previously unseen art illuminate themes of resilience\, friendship\, and the transformative power of artistic expression. Smith and Bok’s correspondence stands as a testament to their shared vision and unwavering commitment to pushing the boundaries of artistic exploration in Florida. \nThis evening event is presented during our monthly Last Wednesday hours\, when we open our gallery free of charge with a cash bar from 5:30-8pm. Learn more here.
