Art31: Borrowed Light – Stephen Knapp, Deanna Morse & Ryan Buyssens

For 31 days in March, contemporary artists from across the U.S. create new works and engage the public in the creative process. Art31 is a series of exhibits and art happenings that honors the Art & History Museums – Maitland (A&H) Maitland Art Center’s history as the Research Studio. In the spirit of experimentation and collaboration in modern art, the Research Studio welcomed luminaries such as Milton Avery and Ralston Crawford from 1937 – 1959.

The centerpiece of Art31, Borrowed Light, provides a platform for artists working with light-based installations to collaborate and experiment in the galleries and on the campus of A&H. Borrowed Light will present a comprehensive study of light as art, bringing nationally renowned artists together for the first time. Several of the artists will use cutting-edge technology to push the boundaries of materials and creativity.  This exhibition runs March 3 – April 16, 2017 and features works by:

• Stephen Knapp: The curator of Boise Art Museum describes Stephen Knapp’s Lightpaintings as existing “at the intersection of abstract painting, sculpture and technology.” The artist creates installations using white light, glass treated with coatings that refract and reflect light, arranged to present a colorful encounter that surrounds visitors, and differs with each exhibition.
• Deanna Morse: A 2016 A&H Artist-in-Residence, Morse will return to create a personal experience with video and music for visitors, titled Deep, Clear, Quiet, using time-lapse footage taken on our campus. It will show how natural light interplays with campus structures throughout the day. Her work has been on Sesame Street and in museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
• Ryan Buyssens : Buyssens is a sculpture instructor at the University of Central Florida, and an internationally shown artist working with 3D printers, laser-cutting, and other machinery to create technologically-advanced art structures. He will create an installation titled Chromactive: an interactive color experience.
