About Materials Fees and Supplies
Each course has either a supply list or a materials fee associated with it. Click the button below to view the supply list for each class. Materials fees must be paid in cash directly to the instructor, and are due on the first day of classes. No additional materials are required for classes that have a materials fee unless otherwise noted.

Live Figure Studio-Long Poses | 6 Weeks
Tuesdays, April 9 - May 14 | 6-8:30pm

Location: Maitland Art Center Studio 10
Cost: $90
Join us for this six-week live figure drawing studio for students of all levels and abilities looking to explore live figure drawing. During each session, a nude model will hold a single pose for students to draw, with the pose changing weekly. Model holds a long pose for entirety of session (20 min. increments with 5 min breaks). Students have the option of using their own media to use within a safe and structured classroom setting. Drawing horses and easels will be provided. This is not an instruction-based class, but rather a structured environment for observation, experimentation, and investigation of the human form. A studio monitor will oversee the session without instruction.
Intermediate Drawing - Creating Realism | 9 Weeks
Wednesdays, April 10 - June 5 | 6-8:30pm

Cost:$275 + supply list
Beginning Drawing with Calixto O'Neill or equivalent knowledge. This class is a continuation of our Beginning Drawing class which will add the exciting concept of value equals shape to create three-dimensional artwork. Students will be introduced to drawing tools, different types of pencils and discuss H pencil leads vs B pencil leads. You will learn how to apply various tonal effects by varying your pressure. You will also learn the importance of atmospheric perspective and answer questions like: How do you Draw Fog? You don't! You draw VALUES! I will teach you with exciting demonstrations as well as show you some of my works. You will learn how to home in your new skills, such as scenery to indicate atmospheric perspective, and portraiture that will challenge your skills to their highest levels.
Live Figure Studio-Short Poses | 6 Weeks
Sundays, April 14 - May 19 | 1-3:30pm

Cost: $90
This six-week live figure drawing studio is dedicated to a majority of shorter poses and open to all levels and abilities looking to develop quick gesture drawing practices. During each session, a nude model will do quick poses to allow artists to learn and tune in their ability in quick gesture drawings in capturing the moment. Students have the option of using their own media to use within a safe and structured classroom setting. A studio monitor will oversee the session without instruction.
Painting with Acrylics | 9 Weeks
Wednesdays, April 10 - June 5 | 6:15-8:15pm

This nine-week multi-level class gives students the opportunity to explore acrylic paint and create three guided paintings, each completely different in subject and style. Students will also complete a fourth painting independently with their choice of subject. Whether you have basic skills, are already a painter, or want a refresher, this is a fun class to learn skills, techniques, and color theory!
Oil Painting with Light & Color | 9 Weeks
Mondays, April 8 - June 3 | 6-8:30pm

Cost: $275 + supply list
Students of all levels will begin or continue to develop painting techniques in the style of classical painters. Emphasis will be given to using light and color to create emotion and realism. Composition, rule of thirds, value studies, painting thick over thin and painting dark to light will be discussed. Learn to paint with a limited color palette and use different mediums. See exciting demos on using different brushes and pallet knife to create emotion and excitement in a painting. Value, shape, atmospheric perspective, and effects of light will be developed through practice pieces. Students will be assigned projects based on their experience level, accomplish four paintings during the session, and be given a choice of subject matter for their final painting.
Luminous Watercolor Painting | 9 Weeks
Thursdays, April 11 - June 6 | 6-8:30pm
Instructor: Calixto O'Neill

Cost: $275 + supply list
Learn how different water amounts interact with pigments and how to paint in a more impressionistic style, which is easier for a beginner. Emphasis will be given on how to create luminosity using transparent qualities and correct pigment color harmonies. Understanding light and shadow for emotional effect will be discussed and applied. We will also explore watercolor pencils, masking fluid, and the 3 most important brushes. First time I learners I will be introducing simple landscape paintings and fruit objects, it will open a whole new world of artistic beauty. For continuing students, I will present more challenging projects addressing atmosphere, light and shadow, and finally portraiture, the most challenging yet.! You will see your paintings take on a new more professional persona. At least four projects will be completed during the 9 weeks. To fully appreciate this class, a foundation in drawing is appreciated but not necessary, open to all levels.
Intro to Pottery | 9 Weeks
Thursdays, April 11 - June 6 | 6-9pm
Senior Instructor: Jim Patterson
Location: Maitland Art Center Studio 4
Cost: $270 + $45 materials fee
Students will learn the basics of pottery, including vocabulary, tools, types of clay, firing methods as well as gain hands-on experience with different hand-building techniques, use of molds, glazing, and decorating projects. Students will create their own unique designs and be guided through the process by the instructor. This class will also introduce the use of the potter’s wheel. Personal and group instruction is provided. Clay, use of tools, glazes and lockers are included with the materials fee.
*Please note, due to class size restrictions, returning students should register for Open Pottery Studio. This introductory class is for new students only.
Pottery Open Studio | 9 Weeks
Tuesdays or Wednesdays, April 9 - June 5 | 6-9pm
Senior Instructor: Jim Patterson
Location: Maitland Art Center Studio 4
Cost: $270 + $45 materials fee
Experienced pottery students may work independently on advanced hand-building and wheel throwing. Personal instruction is provided as needed on advanced finishing techniques like satins, underglazes, and colored slips as well as alternative firings such as raku, horsehair raku, and saggar. Clay, use of tools, glazes and lockers are included with the materials fee.
*Prerequisite: Introduction to Pottery or equivalent experience in the use of the potter's wheel, hand building, and glazing.
Learning New Concepts in Clay and Open Studio | 9 Weeks
Saturdays, April 13 - June 8 | 12-3pm
Senior Instructor: Bert Bogdany
Location: Maitland Art Center Studio 4
Cost: $270 + $45 materials fee
This class is designed for students with previous experience in ceramics in either hand building, or wheel throwing, and glazing. Through visual demonstration the student will be introduced to a variety of advanced wheel throwing and hand building techniques that can be applied in a variety of ways to further explore contemporary concepts in clay. These concepts can be applied to functional or sculptural forms furthering the student’s visual vocabulary and understanding of the various possibilities this medium has to offer. The project demonstrations are techniques rather than work descriptions so the student is encouraged apply these concepts in their own unique way and to provide a positive learning environment that will encourage the student to explore the various possibilities of form in the medium of clay. Please keep in mind all demos are volunteer and this time can be used as an open studio. The materials fee will include clay, glazes, the use of our in-house tools, and storage for your works in progress. In addition to traditional glazes, students will also have the option to use a variety of finishes to complete their works such as, colored slips, underglazes, and Saggar firing.
*Prerequisite: Introduction to Pottery or equivalent experience.
Inspired: The Art & Science of Creativity | 6 Weeks
Saturdays, April 13 - May 18 | 10am-1pm

Location: Maitland Art Center Studio 10
Cost: $185 + $18 materials fee
Open to all levels! Creativity, while heavily associated with the arts, is a form of intelligence we all possess and can improve. In this no-pressure class, you'll level up your creativity, deepen your art knowledge, and become a more inclusive and connected communicator. Students will gain foundational knowledge of how neuroscience, psychology, culture, and other factors affect our thinking; participate in Visual Thinking Strategy (VTS) discussions of 6 art pieces that will better acquaint them with the museum and artist(s), increase metacognition, and allow them to learn from others' diverse perspectives; and complete 6 hand-on exercises designed to improve artmaking skills and confidence in creative abilities (artistic or otherwise).
Refund Policy
Classes & Workshops:
- Class registration ends Wednesday, April 3 2024, at 5PM. Registration for workshops is ongoing and closes the Wednesday prior to the scheduled workshop date. If space is available, late registration may be available before the start of the first class, subject to a $35 late registration fee.
- Classes & workshops in duration of one week or less are not refundable.
- Exchanges or refunds must be requested 7 days before the first class meeting and subject to a $25 administrative fee.
- Withdrawals are available the week of and before the second class for 50% of refund.
- After the second class, refunds are not available, and classes are not prorated for students who are not able to attend the entire semester.
- A&H reserves the right to cancel classes for unforeseen circumstances.
- Classes with insufficient enrollment may be canceled. Students will be notified in advance and full refunds will be issued.
