The Personal is Still Political: A History of Women’s Art and Activism

Inspired by the gallery at A&H, Dr. Steinhaus will discuss the ways women have blended art and activism throughout the centuries. 

This presentation will discuss the history of women in the arts. Centuries of controversy surround their participation, media, subject matter, and messages. Twentieth-century artists especially defied earlier limitations.  Women confronted gender and the body in new and radical ways. They also looked at intersecting identities based on race, class, sexuality, and nationality. The presentation will examine how these legacies from the past provide context for the extraordinary exhibition by Jessica Caldas on display in A&H’s Maitland Art Center Gallery.

Dr. Kathryn Steinhaus is a professor of History & Humanities at Seminole State College in Sanford/ Lake Mary. She earned her doctorate in History at McGill University after completing a Master’s degree there and her Bachelor’s at Gonzaga University. Her research focuses on the interaction of gender, politics, and culture. She is dedicated to providing accessible education to students.
