Free Family Day: Early Spring at A&H!

February 18, 2023 @ 11:00 am - 1:00 pm

Art & History Museums – Maitland

Our Early Spring Family Day is free of charge and sponsored by Massey Services.

Come celebrate the first signs of spring at the Art and History Museums in Maitland with a morning filled with nature-themed art activities all over our National Historic Landmark campus!

Early Spring pinch pot dish with a leaf & colorful stones embedded into itIn the Mayan courtyard, we’ll have a pinch pot clay art workshop, where children can hand-build their own clay pot embellished with tiny treasures from nature! Our pinch pots are inspired by A&H’s founding artist, J. André Smith, who created many of the nature-themed sculptures on our National Historic Landmark campus. Your special creations will be ready to take home after the workshop!

In our main garden, children will use their observational skills on an “I Spy” spring-themed scavenger hunt and create art in a mini sketchbook from the sights they see in our garden, like floating lily pads, tiny tadpoles, budding flowers – and even cement carvings adorned on the garden’s walls, doors and pathways designed by J. André Smith.

Before leaving, children can take a bit of our garden home by decorating a recycled pot and planting seedlings for the new season.

We’ll have more surprises too, like face painting and complimentary admission to all our main campus museum attractions—including our contemporary art museum filled with sculptural work by Bahamian-born sculptor Kendra Frorup, our interactive Telephone Museum, and the Indigenous history exhibition in our Maitland History Museum.
