A&H's Artist-in-Residence, Carole d'Inverno, in her Brooklyn studio Join us for an evening with our Artist-in-Residence, Carole d'Iverno. The Italian-born, Brooklyn-based abstract artist describes her work as being rooted in history. Hear from Carole herself about how our historic 1930s campus and surrounding Maitland area is informing her latest work on Florida's rich natural and human history. Dr. Scot French In the lecture, Dr. Scot French, guest curator of the Maitland History Museum's Spring 2019 exhibition, will discuss his efforts to document Maitland's African American History -- from the arrival of homesteaders and grove workers in the mid-1870s through the Jim Crow Era of exclusion, marginalization, and erasure to the desegregated civic and commemorative landscapes of today. The Maitland Art Center's spring exhibition proudly features both an insider's and outsider's perspective of the African-American community in Maitland and Eatonville during the 20th century. The outsider is the Maitland Art Center's own founder, J. André Smith, and the insider perspective is brought by local artist Jane Turner, who still lives and works in Eatonville and Maitland. Meet Ms. Turner and hear how her personal history intertwines with local history - and how her artwork is influenced by both.
