Art School Workshops for Adults

Sketch Club
Located in Studio 10
Days/Time: Every Thursday, 6:45-9:15pm
Cost: $10 members, $15 others
Sketch Club is a weekly drop-in figure drawing opportunity. (No pre-registration needed.) Must be over 18 years old. The first and third Thursdays of each month include short poses ranging from 1 minute to 20 minutes. The second and fourth Thursdays of each month are long pose nights which include only one pose, with breaks, for the duration of the evening. Easels & drawing horses are provided on a first come, first served basis. Please bring your own art materials. No instruction provided.

Monotype: Black & White/Dark & Light Field

Bring your creative expression to the fun and flexible experience of creating monotypes. While doing so become familiar with general printmaking basics. Artists of all levels are welcome including beginners and experienced artists seeking to expand into other media. You are encouraged to bring ideas for images that you wish to develop in this medium.

Experimentation with Cement Planters (2-day)
Instructor: Danielle DeGuglimo

Materials Fee: $15
Use everyday materials to create cement planters and outdoor ornaments. Students will experiment with different techniques using molds to create outdoor pots and planters. Explore mixing cement, pouring and making simple molds, using pigment dyes and creating unique planters for your garden space.

MacraMAKE your very own macrame market bag! Learn how to tie a variety of decorative knots with hands on instruction and vintage cord. All materials and light snacks are included with your tuition, as well as a take home booklet of hand drawn knotting instructions to help you recreate each knot at home.

Hanji Making: Mulberry Paper

Experience the spirit of Korean culture by learning the history and techniques of hanji, traditional paper made from the mulberry tree. Students will use a mold and deckle set with hands-on techniques to make paper sheets. Must be 16 years or older to participate.

Eco Printing and Natural Dyeing

Through this introduction to the concepts of natural dyeing, experience the process by learning color from fruits, vegetables and even insects. This will provide a base of knowledge and encourage further exploration at home. Students will experiment with eco-printing to create a scarf or handkerchief. Must be 16 years or older to participate.

  • Flush Setting Stones in Pendants – July 14
    Materials: $10-50, depending on project
    Learn to flush-set stones into metal to create your own pendant. Familiarity with hand tools is beneficial, but not required.
  • Tube Setting Stones – August 11
    Materials: purchase from instructor
    Learn to tube set stones adding to the design of your jewelry. Materials available for purchase from instructor; bring simple design ideas to workshop.
  • Make a Ring – June 9 and September 8
    Learn the 3 basic steps of fabrication while creating a silver ring to custom fit your size.

Matching Ring Workshop

Encaustics All Day

Students of all levels are welcome to relax into a creative state as we explore the ancient art of Encaustics. From the basics to an in-depth study of the process, we’ll explore materials such as melted beeswax, pigments, damar resin, and others used to create richly colored paintings. You’re welcome to bring your own photos, images, and drawings to incorporate into your new artwork.

Hot Wax Happiness: Encaustic Painting & Printmaking (2-day)

Students of all levels are welcome to explore the ancient medium of Encaustics. From the basics to an in-depth study of the medium come experiment with this luminosity of this luscious medium that offers the most versatile possibilities. R&F demo artist Shelley Jean will expand your knowledge of encaustic technique and safe practices in this 2-day intensive. We will learn various methods of painting and printmaking including incising, pigment sticks, image transfers, textures, collage, and mixed media techniques. All materials are supplied, however students are welcome to bring their own papers, photos, favorite tool, mixed media bobbles. Students will leave with several paintings and prints.

DRAWING & PAINTING

Create Your Own “Masterpiece”

Join this fun workshop where you will create a Cezanne painting but make it your own! You are shown how to paint the image onto the canvas and then get to freely paint it how you want – creating your own masterpiece.

Portrait Workshop (2-day)

Location: The Studios at Lake Lily
This workshop will equip students with basic knowledge that can be used to paint portraits for potential clients or for personal use. Topics include seeing and understanding the individual features of the people you paint, mixing colors for various skin tones, the practical application of proper and favorable lighting. In addition, students will learn to truly see the portrait’s subject, allowing a fuller, richer portraiture. A step by step approach ensures success for all students, regardless of experience.

Saturday Painting Workshops

These workshops are a blend of painting and mixed media techniques, exploring a looser style of painting and greater expression. Complete a project in each unique workshop. All workshops are appropriate for all learners, unless noted.

  • Beach House – June 1
    Study dramatic shadow and lighting in a fun summertime painting! Learn perspective, light source and color temperature as we create a beautiful beach house painting.
  • Expressive Birds – July 6
    Learn how to apply both representational and abstract acrylic painting techniques in this fun expressive class as we paint birds!
  • Glass and Transparent Objects – August 3
    Have you ever wondered how to paint glass and really achieve that transparent affect?! This workshop will focus on exactly that! Learn how to realistically paint objects such as vases, wine bottles or glass.

Live Model Mini Sessions with PJ

This is an a la carte approach to the figure with instruction and a live model. Viewing a live nude model learn to successfully draw or paint a figure. Interested in Portraits? Join in March for creating a portrait from a live model.

Wet & Wild Charcoal Drawing
Instructor: Derek Gores
Date/Time: Friday, July 26, 9am-4pm

Location: Studio 10 at the Maitland Art Center
Learn to “loosen up” and develop an intuitive touch in your art, taught by internationally acclaimed collage artist Derek Gores. Using water and charcoal, you’ll enhance your speed and sensitivity. Derek recommends wet drawing as the perfect bridge between drawing and painting. He will demonstrate, and lead you in several drawings, and help you find the marks that your own hands uniquely want to make. Elements of abstraction and drawing from the figure model are included.
